This 1915 historic site was the town's original gravesite. Upright whalebones mark, in traditional Eskimo style, some of the graves where many well known forefathers of this state rest. Alaska's well-known artist, Sydney Laurence, is buried here as is Robert Reeve, the pioneer aviator of the Anchorage-Seattle route, and Charley Stanford, who carried the mail over the Iditarod route with sled dogs. This location was designated a National Historic Site in April 1993. There is no admission fee for viewing this park.

Not your average working cemetery
By Heather, 09/15/06
Right off the bat we realized that this was still a very active working cemetery around town. Most of it is very modern and looks like any other cemetery. As you drive in, though you will start to see some of the local cultural and historic touches. The whale bone headstones and occasional statuary is interesting. Is it the most fascinating or well-documented cemetery I've ever visited? Absolutely not, but given how easy it is to get to and drive through it is worth a visit if you enjoy that sort of thing.
