Red Cabbage Cafe (The)

Description

The walls here are covered with movie star photos, posters and more movie memorabilia, along with selections from famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's cookbook. Also known as the "El Repollo Rojo," this restaurant offers a menu of seafood specialties and unusual Mexican or Yucatan favorites. The woman-owned restaurant also has a woman-dominated kitchen turning out Chiles en Nogada, lobster, vegetarian dishes, and whatever else the bountiful local market has inspired for that day. Looking for something unusual to do? The restaurant also organizes food tours and offers cooking classes.

Amazing Food
By ,
We went to the Red Cabbage cafe twice while we were in PV. The food and margaritas are awesome. By far the best food we have had in Mexico. The mole's and Frida's menu were outstanding. The place is small and a short walk from the beach but it is well worth the trip.

We highly recommend Red Cabbage!
By ,
This was our first visit to PV, and the only authentic Mexican restaurant we found there. Our birding tour guide, a PV resident, recommended it. We didn't think it was such a short walk from the beach, but we were walking at night and the street we chose didn't have many streetlights -- so maybe it's not so far in daylight. 8~) If you're adventurous, we found that a bus runs right past the front door. The mole' was excellent. We enjoyed speaking with the owner about the Diego Rivera murals in our home town; it was great to have the owner visiting tables and showing interest in her guests.

I have always visited the restaurant at least once during my stays in PV. The menu is varied; the dishes are excellent. I'll be back!

Some of the best food I've ever had!
By ,
One of the best restaurants I've ever eaten in, anywhere. Great, great food. Particularly enjoyed the stuffed peppers from Frieda's wedding menu. Lovely people. Wonderful menu.

Book a flight now!

Blown away by the food. Best margaritas we ever had. Great spot for first night in town. Pumps you up for rest of trip. Left with another couple to listen to jazz. If you have one meal in town, go here.

My Favorite Restaurant in the WORLD
By ,
I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE THE RED CABBAGE!! Its my favorite place to eat ever. The Chiles Enogadas especially! Lola is the owner of this fantastic eatery and not only does she create the menu, she cooks for her patrons herself! All the Chille dishes are incredible. THe decor of the place is so unique. Everything is decorated and celebrates mexican cultre, history and theatre. She has cooking classes during the day as the restaurant is only open at night and you can learn how to make some of her famous dishes. The secret ingredient is love. You will be licking your plate clean and asking for seconds. Also, she makes THE BEST refried beans. Think i'm joking? you have to try yourself and TRUST me you won't be sorry:)

Good but...
By ,
Have been here twice. The peanut soup and spinach salad are always spot on. Had the Oaxacan Mole the first time, delicious. Had the chipolte ribs the second time, outstanding! My only question is, what's the deal with the bland rice and buffet steamed veggies? Put some effort into those sides, they make the meal complete.

One of my all time favorites!
By ,
This is a wonderful little out of the way restaurant, dedicated to Frida Kahlo. My favorite appetizer is the cold spinach salad, and my husband thinks it's the best mole in town!

Horrible
By ,
No doubt the restaurant is beautiful, once they decide you are worth letting past the iron gate. But everything else inside the place was a huge letdown. The waiters were rude, walking away from our table in the middle of questions about the menu. Not answering direct questions about specific items on the menu and totally unresponsive to drink refills. The food was OK, but overpriced and over done. In a country where they are known for their hospitality, there is no sense wasting time at a restaurant where they make you feel very unwelcome.

Now this is charming. If you're in PV for a spell, you must eat here. Just getting to the restaurant is enchanting. The food is great and so are the people. Chill...you're in Mexico. I LOVE IT!!!
