Museo de San Carlos

Description

Found within an elegant nineteenth century townhouse, whose Neo-classical design is the creation of famous Valencian architect and sculptor Manuel Tolsá, the National Museum of San Carlos houses an important collection of European art. The bulk of the almost two thousand exhibits are made up of paintings dating from the fifteenth to early twentieth century. Additionally, there are also engravings, drawings and sculpture. There are Spanish gothic boards and paintings belonging to the Renaissance, Mannerist, Baroque, Neo-classical, Romantic and Symbolist styles, derived from the Italian, Spanish, Flemish and French schools. The museum also possesses one of the three European altarpieces found in Mexico, showing scenes from the life of Christ such as the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Kings and the Crucifixion. Some of the more well known artists represented by the museum include Zurbarán, Rubens, Ingres, Landessio, Chicharro and Sorolla.
