The Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana) is one of the most important historical buildings in Mexico City. Construction was started at the beginning of the 18th century and continued throughout the next 300 years. This is why different influences can be detected in the architectural style, dominated by Spanish Renaissance and French Neo-Classicism, along with a Baroque touch to the rose sandstone roof. The cathedral's five aisles are adorned with ornate altars and elaborate engravings, and its floors are made of marble. Don't miss this transcendental symbol of the Mexican people's faith and devotion.
I never had been before any man made structure so old before. The age beauty and majesty and spirtuality of the place overwhelmed me. I'm not much given to prayer but I found myself on my knees. It was aged and eroded on the outside and aged and beautiful on the inside. I went into it two different occaisions.
I have visited this place for those reasons. It is very historical and beautiful with great architecture and saints. The first thing I do here when I come here is kneel and pray because I am Mexican and was raised Catholic, so it is a must for me. Then I truly look around. i am mostly astonished by the saints since I know most of them and each one has a different mission. They still look well preserved and painted after all these years. Please respect our churches and religion.!
oh my gosh, it is amazing, as soon as you get in, you get astonished! the beauty and perfection, it is so old, and still so awesome, i loved it, and im not even catholic, and i remembered the day i went it was ash wednesday
The Metropolitan Cathedral is a must if you visit Mexico City. Construction and decoration took nearly 3 centuries (1573-1656).
The cathedral is host to a mixture of styles, a result of being built over such a long period of time. Hernán Cortés and the other conquistadores used the stones from the destroyed temple of the Aztec god of war Huitzilopochtli, main deity of the Aztecs, to build the cathedral. The cathedral has four facades with portals flanked by columns and statues. The two bell towers contain a total of 25 bells. Fourteen of the cathedral's sixteen chapels are open to the public. There are amazing ornate altars, altarpieces, retablos, paintings, furniture and sculptures.
The cathedral is home to two of the largest 18th century pipe organs in the Americas. My advise is to visit in the afternoon, because there are two masses in the morning, and access is blocked either to the front or the rear of the cathedral. But if you would like to experience the sound and vibrations of the organ, go in the morning. Casual apparel is OK, but remember that you will be entering a conservative religious site, so keep in mind that you have to be respectful. If you are not, one of the many security guards will remind you.
I loved the Cathedral metropolitana. There are so many things to see in that one cathedral. The original painting of the virgin Mary that dates back to the sixteenth century still lies there and it is an amazing sight.
