Plaza de la Constitución / El Zócalo

Description

This is the main public plaza of Mexico Federal District and the epicenter for events, festivals and protests. The plaza is equally known as the Zócalo, which means pedestal. At one time destined as a monument to Independence—planned but never built—the name remained and has become synonymous with the word plaza throughout Mexico. The Spaniards erected their main institutions, between the 16th and 18th centuries, around the plaza, built on the former ceremonial site of Tenochtitlán. Daily flag ceremonies take place at 6a and 6p.

A must see!!
By ,
This is the best place to be if you are in the area. There are traditional dances all day long, and stop around 10pm, this is a safe area that is highly guarded by the federal police, that are oustide the cathedral. This group dances and plays drums, its really interesting as they are actual ancestors from different groups. There is someone that comes around with a "bowl" to put money in, which they say is to buy materials to make their costumes. Definetly check it out and for a few pesos they will also take a picture with you, they ask to give whatever you'd like.

as good as it gets

To see Mexico City with friends who live there is to be part of it not just a spectator. Like ANY huge city you can find the good and the bad. Be careful and watch yourself and you will be endlessly delighted with the place, the events, and especially the people. You could spend monthe here and not see a fraction of it.....see the canals.........

Must Go!
By ,
Of all the places in Mexico City, the Zocolo most reflects its complex mixture of culture and history. Simply stand in the middle and turn in a circle and you will see the elements of Mexico City from its ancient history to present. Also, the Zocolo attracts an interesting mix of people. So, if you are a people watcher, this is your spot!

Largest city in the world!
By ,
No one can miss the whole Mexico City experiance, it's the largest city in the world, both in size and population, and it has one of the greatest people and a very rich history. You'll find lots of things to do, and if you visit, try and stay no less than a week so you can at least get an idea of what is all about, everywhere you turn your head to there's something to see, eat or do. You'll have the time of your life! And F.Y.I. Mexico is in North America, not Central America like some people think! You just have to look it on a map! Like most large cities, you have to be aware of your surroundings and people approaching you that may be of any danger, you just have to take your basic precautions and you'll be fine. Go and discover why Mexico City is such a wonderful place to spend a life time!

I loved the culture and the people. They were all full of life. The food was great and the weather was wounderful during May. The festivities went on every night with dancing and singing. You will have to see it for ytourself.

Zcalo
By ,
This was my first view of the city, directly from the metro. It was breathtaking. There was the Catedral in its glory and a ton of people. I could hear the noise of the vendors and smell the food. A parade of army men marched right in the National palace next to me, complete with automatic rifles. The square, second largest in the world, showcased a myriad of political protesters to officials in Oaxaca and Mexico state, everywhere. They were bold, even stating an official as a fascist. People were open minded here. More political views. There was a demonstration of tons of electrical and mechanical engineers paraded throug the street about something or other. It was moving. You just don't seem this much activity. There are vendors everywhere here and Aztec dancers at night.
