Parque Punta Sur
Description
Located at the southernmost tip of Cozumel, this 247-acre nature reserve opened in 1999. Its focus is on conservation of local flora and fauna, so no cars are allowed into the park. If you're lucky you may spot crocodiles, egrets, foxes, herons, iguanas and other wildlife. You can also visit the Mayan ruin El Caracol and the navigational museum in the Punta Celerain Lighthouse . The Balneario el Caracol restaurant serves excellent meals and rents out snorkel gear. The beach here is quite pristine. Admission is USD10, free after 3p.
We went on a Sunday and were the only Anglo's there, all of the other people there were locals. They were some of the nicest people I have ever met. One of the gentlemen was a park ranger on his day off, he made sure that we got our money's worth he even took the time to make sure we got to see a croc.Great place only out done by the great people, very secluded and RELAXING.
Just returned from Cozumel. Stayed at Fiesta Americana Hotel. Main purpose was to scuba dive. Excellent diving.Reef was pristine and the underwater life was great. Best of all was the night life. We went to Carlos n Charlies and Senor frogs every night. The best Italian food on the island was at Primas and Guidos. Excellent vacation. We will be back next year.
I just got back from Punta Sur. Only in National Geographic magazines have I seen as beautiful of scenes. My son and I had a great time, it truly is God's Paradise.
Visited the Punta Sur park in August-06. Drove a rental car to the lighthouse parking lot. $10 pp entrance fee. At the lighthouse a truck drove us a few miles to the beach area. Our entrance fee entitled us to a pontoon boat ride around the estuary. We saw aligators, birds and iguanas. The entrance fee also entitled us to the use of the hammocks and lounge chairs on the beach. Snorkel equipment is also available for an additional fee. Hurricane damage has made much of the surrounding vegetation gray in color. It is estimated that it will take 10 years for the area to recover.
