Not the same as it used to be...
I'll start with the positive. Its a beautiful sandbar island that is the perfect escape for a relaxing afternoon.
The Bad. Since the hurricane it has actually changed ownership twice. The hurricane damaged amny of the indigineous pine trees on the island. Instead of replacing them with the same trees, rows of palms have been planted, so the look has gone from exotic to tourist tropical. While the new dining facilities are much better organized, they are a reminder of a high school cafeteria. The food is not bad, and the guac. Is pretty good, but they start cleaning up early, so if you are the last group on the island ( everyone goes home at night ), the food is shut off about an hour before, so eat up, or stock up.
The same goes for the beverages. There used to be two bars, one on the beach and one in the restaurant. It was an all inclusive open bar. Now it still has two bars, but one is a cash bar with the liquor ( tequila .shots $4.00 + ) and very watered down pre mixed drinks at the open bar with a menu of only 5 or 6 that they make plus the standard corona with lime. My advice, stick with the beer.
Originally they had small rest rooms, seperate showers and changing rooms. This has been modified to restrooms with stalls which you can chang in but no place to put your items but on the floor by the toilets. This was not an upgrade in my opinion, but the tile around the sink is pretty.
The shower is out by the beach and is not private nor does it have a lot of water pressure.
The other addition are the little stores. Originally there were a couple of tents and the proprietors would walk the beach and hawk their wares. It is sometimes annoying but you could haggle and make a game of it. NOW there are these make shift overpriced stores. Take my advice the junk they sell is much cheaper in town and at least you can compare prices from store to store. They also have the addition of a masseur and I think you can get a manicure and pedicure also. A pack of cigarettes, not that I smoke was $7.00 US firm.
While I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure the first time around and was so looking forward to it this past trip, I have to say at this point I won't be returning.
Its not the beach, or the water, its the total makeover of 'El touristo" island complete with Isla de Passion T-shirts, hats, and other logo items, along with the overall commercialization of what once seemed like a desert isle, not to mention the watereddown open bar selections and the overpriced cash bar ones. For the cost of two shots of tequila you can bring home a whole bottle.
This place is no longer worth the price of the ship excursion, or the entrance fee to come aboard.
Sorry about the discouraging review, I'm just as discouraged.
