Los Cinco Soles
Located in a refurbished Colonial warehouse, this store takes up an entire block. The owner of the store has chosen her stock with great care, so while you can get the standard array of t-shirts and beachwear, there are also some fine examples of hand-made crafts by artisans from all over Mexico, like brass figurines from Jalisco. If you get hungry while shopping you can eat at Pancho's Backyard , which has a menu to make any gringo stomach happy.
Avoid the little mom & pop shops. They carry the same merchandise at nearly 3x the price as Los Cinco Soles. I suspect that many of them buy from Los Cinco Soles and mark the prices up at their shops off the beaten paths, to catch tourists who are looking for a "deal"; even if you haggle down, you're still getting ripped off. Trust me, you won't get a better deal than you'll get at Los Cinco Soles.
We're off again to Cancun on a quickie 5 night cruise. Can't wait to hit Cinco Soles...it's a long walk from the cruise ship pier for this older lady...but I figure that a taxi eats up the savings! Great stuff...even the husband likes their wares! I have baskets of their papier mache fruits and veggies. People can't believe how realistic they are. Nice tree ornaments for Christmas too. Of course the vanilla is exceptional.
If you dock on a Sunday, they open later. Can't remember exactly what time, but it was closer to noon than their regular hours.
Skip all of the shops along the way, and be careful of the Cuban Cigar sellers. They offer to "help" you get the "merchandise" into the States without a problem. I avoid them like the plague, even though I have family who would kill for the famous Cuban smoke.
My husband and I have been to Cozumel several times by cruise ship or ferry from Playa Del Carmen, and we always make a special trip to Los Cinco Soles. We prefer the original location, even if it is not as convenient as the new port-side store. Silver jewelry, coffee, hot sauce, vanilla, Kahlua, etc.,are always top quality, even if not the cheapest prices in town. If you go, be sure to stop by Pancho's Backyard for lunch or a drink. It always gets great reviews when we recommend it to folks we meet while traveling.
PLease tell me how to get to Los Cinco Soles! I'm going on a cruise in May and really want to get some REAL VANILLA!!! We are stopping in Cozumel so I will be there? Directions would be Awesome!!! Thanx :)
We docked in Puerta Maya and walked and walked and walked. We looked at every store on the waterfront and bought junk here and there, but when we got to Los Cinco Soles we wished we could return it all. It was a wonderful shopping experience. We bought souveniers for all of our family and things for ourselves all in one store!! They were so nice and I felt good about buying there because everything was guaranteed by our cruise lines. You don't have to bargain with them because their prices are already so low. After we shopped we went to Pancho's backyard and had the best mexican food meal either of us has ever enjoyed!!!
My husband and I had hit several shops in Cancun looking for authentic Mexican handicrafts but were put off by the fact that every store was filled with the same stuff, most, if not all of it, junk (not to put too fine a point on it!). Our guidebook recommended Los Cinco Soles in Cozumel, so we went in when we visited there. We found lots of great stuff - jewelry, tequila, Mexican pottery. You name it, they have it. While the sales staff is helpful and follows you closely, perhaps to ensure that some of their smaller wares don't get pocketed, they don't push you to buy like nearly every other store employee in Mexico. We found what we were looking for and, though we may have paid more than we would have elsewhere, it was well worth the extra cash to be free of the hassles inherent in most Mexican shopping.
