The traditional home to Montreal's middle-class Jewish community, Mile End is an unofficial designation that usually refers to the area around Parc Avenue in the 5000-address range. Ethnically, the area is now as diverse as the rest of the city, and architecturally it can be seen as a less gentrified extension of the Plateau Mont-Royal. Lingering testaments to the still considerable Jewish population include the Fairmount and St-Viateur bagel shops.
It is one of my favorite areas of Montreal. Lots of hidden gems/shops in the streets. One which my wife and I discovered was called SUNSOURCE FOODS on Laurier street. It was the coolest and trendiest bulk food store we've seen with amazing freshly roasted nuts and coffee. We also loved the Bagel shop on Fairmont as well the Italian coffee houses a few streets up. Don't miss this area if you're in Montreal!
I lived here before getting evicted by the Greeks that owned my place. They don't really believe in the law up there: I don't know anyone in Mile End who had a legal lease.
But it was definitely worth the trouble. Yummy bagels, yummy coffee and Italians at Olimpico, yummy breakfast at Senzala's, yummy grocery stores on Park Avenue. This is definitely the best neighborhood in North America.
