Consistently voted Montreal's best brunch spot, this legendary diner is a must-visit, provided that you can deal with enormous weekend queues. Beauty's is neither hip nor health-conscious, but for wonderfully prepared breakfast standards it has few equals. Piles of fresh fruit accompany every meal, though regulars have been known to leave it on the plate. On Sundays, aim to arrive before 10am or expect to wait upwards of an hour in line.
Our friends turned us on to this place with rave reviews on the nova lox and bagels. Unfortunately this is just another diner, perhaps resting on its heyday laurels. The food was mostly "just OK" No, there were no piles of fruit with each meal, as the other review states. The burgers we had were unlike any burger meat we've ever tasted. It may be Kosher, but it almost tasted like bad meat - yuk. And the "fries" that came with the burger? home fries - odd. We won't be going back.
Beauty's has been a landmark for decades (and rightly so). The manager is the nicest man ever, and just take 10 minutes of your line queuing time to talk to him and see what a pleasure he is. He is also the original owner so in response to another comment, there was no management change. I love this restaurant, and I will continue to eat there, particularly as a local (Just not on Sunday).
There is nowhere else in the world I would rather have breakfast than a booth at Beauty's. Despite the sometimes crowded, see and be seen atmosphere and the high prices, there is no contest.
The coffee is magical, the Mishmash is divine, the cream cheese in the bagel lox and cream cheese is brought in from New York and it's the best I've ever tasted and you get a Montreal bagel with every meal... and strawberry jam. I also recommend the Beauty's basic (Bagel, lox, cream cheese) on Pumpernickel. Breakfast or brunch is clearly the specialty. Now that I live in Toronto I can only dream about eggs, bacon, buttery potatoes and a bagel from Beauty's.
All Montrealers know this place is charmed. Consider yourself lucky if you are ever in proximity to landmark. Enjoy every minute of it, get cozy, even if you are sitting at the counter or waiting in line, don't forget to take it all in. Breakfast in Montreal is the best and Beauty's is the best of the best.
When you walk into Beauty's you feel like you have dropped into a neighborhood and not a tourist site. The food is good, not spectacular, and there was a wait (therefore, somebody besides me likes this place!!!). This is not gourmet, but basic eggs with bagels, home fries, etc. You feel like you have suddenly dropped out of Montreal and into a NY neighborhood diner 20 years ago!!
We enjoyed our meals, the waitress was lovely, food delivered promptly, and the owner and one of the cooks chatted with us. All in all, for a basic deli brunch, it was what we expected.
(By the way, take home a whole wheat bread and the banana chip loaf, both excellent!.
The food is good. It isn't amazing. I think their prices were too high so I wouldn't line up for it again. when I was done eating I was in a hurry anyway because I didn't think the line would take as long as it did. So I left quickly.
As visitors to Montreal, someone in our hotel told my wife and I about this place, so we decided to check it out. I wish I could get that hour of my life back but it's down the drain for good. We waited for 25 minutes in line for bacon and eggs, which were average. They told us that celebrities sometimes eat there. I don't think so. Maybe some "local" celebrities, but even so I would be surprised. Funny part is (just like the other review says) we were basically asked to leave before we were done. The manager is a obviously challenged with even basic customer service skills. I loved Montreal, it's a great city and we plan to visit again next summer. We won't be eating at Beauty's ever again.
I am from montreal and I can tell you that this place has a great reputation because it used to be great. Sadly, that is no longer the case. I think they must have changed the management a few years ago or something... If you'd like to experience lining up for an hour, for badly over-priced (and very basic) bacon and eggs, only to then get rushed out of your seat while you're still chewing, so that the next cattle (i mean customers) can be herded in - then this place is for you... The 50-something manager, who's very "retentive" looking, is most easily described as an even mix of both rudeness and obnoxiousness.
Breakfast should be enjoyable and relaxing! You'll get much more enjoyment for a $20/person breakfast just about anywhere else.
