Plan to book well in advance at this always-crowded little restaurant on the edge of Little Italy. Efficient and friendly service and exceptional food make up for the nondescript decor and the crowds. Dishes include an array of vegetarian antipasto, such as Steamed Asparagus Spears and Grilled Portobello Mushrooms with melted cheese. Mains include Roast Veal and various gnocchi dishes. Dinner for two, excluding wine or tip, comes to between CAD60-90.
The menu was in Italian which is fine if you speak Italian and if your waiter translates for you, which he did. We weren't sure what appetizers to have so the waiter suggested that he could bring us a bit of everything. Fine, how much. "Don't worry."
Previously, we had read on the Il Mulino web site that a typical meal should cost about 50.00 per person before wine. We were prepared for that.
I told the waiter that we didn't know anything about wine. He said that he would choose for us a wine that would marry with our meals. I told him that we did not want the best wine. We were on a limited budget. The wine came, it was great and we did not ask how much it was per glass. Perhaps we should have.
The appetizers came and they were absolutely amazing. Incedible. Wow. No idea how much they were going to cost and we did not ask. I was under the impression that the waiter understood, because I told him, that we didn't want to break the bank on this one meal.
The main courses came. Of the three that came (remember for later that there were three of us) two were sub-par. Quite bad really. They were the salted cod and the Guinea Hen. Nothing special.
After five (total) glasses of wine between the three of us and our appetizers and mains and desserts (the desserts were very very good, we waited a rather long time for the coffee that we ordered which we drank and enjoyed when it finally came.
Then the bill came and it was $368.00 before tip.
Way too much for what we had and for the quality of the food.
Be warned. I would not have minded so much if the main courses had been very very good. They were not. In the end, I feel somewhat responsible for not asking the cost of things and for not keeping on top of everything as it was ordered.
Be warned. It's nice. Not that nice.
The food is absolutely divine and what about the special dessert.....you have to try this restaurant, I have no words to describe the meal we had. Excellent service and ambiance, quite expensive but worths its $ anytime.
