Wilensky's Light Lunch

Description

Similar in culinary stature to Schwartz's and Ben's, this classic lunch counter serves but two things of any import: a chopped egg sandwich and "The Special," a renowned mixture of salami and bologna on a kaiser, swimming in yellow mustard. Most diners polish it all off with an old-fashioned hand-pulled Cherry Coke, and escape into Mile-End only about CAD5 worse for wear. The well-worn interior has been the setting for many a Montreal-based movie, and though it is hardly haute cuisine, a visit here is de rigeur.

The best bologna sandwich on the planet!
By Ed, 2/21/07
The service is curt if not surly! The place is a dive although it does have character. You go to this place for the "Special" and a coke...and then you get out! I used to live a few blocks away, the "Special" made a qucik and tasty lunch on my way to classes at McGill. 100% Montreal.

The way it was... they way it outta be
By Eric, 8/18/05
Not for everyone, but the kind of place your dad should have brought you too for a father/kid lunch. It's the kind of place where that tradition should pass down through generations forever. Have a "special" and a cherry coke (homemade). Can a bologna sandwich be anything but average? I don't know. But as far as bologna/salami sandwiches go, it's great and you'll remember your trip to Montreal as something special. The ambience is old school and authentic. Nothing nice, but nothing contrived. It took years to make Wilensky's what it is: a genuine institution. Saddle up to the counter, and they'll take care of you.
