Steve's Music Store
This music store has come a long way since it first opened its doors in a seedy part of Montreal in 1965. Today, the Toronto store is massive and there's also a third store in Ottawa. There's no great secret to its success: the ability to provide musicians, both amateur and professional, with the musical equipment they demand. The store also sports a sheet music section, public address systems and equipment rentals.
We were tired and grumpy, driving from Montréal to Toronto at around 8am after playing a show the previous night and not getting to bed before 5am. We were going to Toronto to play a show, and half-way between Kingston and Toronto we realized that we were missing some basic things that had gone missing the previous night: microphone, some midi cables and some stands (good ol' Montréal!). We were playing right on Queen St. West, with four other bands, and knew that we wouldn't have time to go running around to shop for stuff and try to get the best price, so we would have to go to Steve's Music.
We are used to the atmosphere at the Montréal store, where at the best of times someone will eventually pay attention to you (though to be fair to the Montréal staff, this has improved over the past year, especially at the front counter). We walked into the Toronto store, and were cordially greeted right at the front counter. One guy got us our strings right away, offered us a discount via a Steve's rewards program (no one in Montréal told us about this), and within ten minutes we had our mics, cables and a sweet deal on a used pedal. Another staff member introduced us to some friends of hers who were there at the same time as us who were on the same bill.
We hung around and chatted with the staff, one of the managers, and I was blown away by the atmosphere in there... you wouldn't get that at Archambault or L&M, not in my experience anyways.
I'm, 19 years old and many people chose not to help me out when i walk into a store (especially music stores). At steve's, however, two employees were helping me out for as long as i needed it knowing i wasnt going to buy anything that day. Great atmosphere, great people.
I visited Steve`s store in Ottawa twice and came away with a very negative view. First time with a friend who was looking for a sound system and sales people were more interested in watching a movie running on some equipment. Secoond visit I was interested in purchasing a bouzouki. Sales person wasn`t interested in serving me. When asked if they might take a trade-in, he curtly said no and put the instrument back. So I bought it elsewhere.
I went to this store in Ottawa, Ontario, and found that when I went to see if I could get a decent price on a professional saxophone, they snubbed me, and said they had no discounts, NOTHING. Their price was 2000 dollars more expensive than the EXACT same horn is here in NS. I was looking for a good deal, and the guy who was working the Woodwind section of the store looked to be nearly braindead!!!
Steve's Music also operates a music equipment rental store, located on St. Peter Street, just behind the actual store. The staff there are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The rental prices are the best around. Don't go anywhere else.
I've been searching for a few answers to getting the perfect birthday gift for my boyfriend...the staff at steve's was the most comprehensive and knowledgable staff i've encountered! They got me the answers i needed and helped me pull off an amazing birthday for my guy! THANK YOU!
