Located near the St Lawrence Market , this is a basic British-style pub complete with a dartboard and pool table. The bar attracts plenty of corporates but the atmosphere is relaxed and calm. The dark wooden ceiling beams, pictures of Queen Victoria and Churchill and Victorian-style lanterns invite you to settle on a bar stool or at a table. The standard British menu, like shepherd's pie, fish and chips, and liver and onions is what you get here. You can also choose from burgers, all-day breakfast, steak and seafood.
I wrote the first review and not this one...it would appear that some of the pub's staff are taking a bit of artistic license..
IMO down on esplanade there are a couple of reasonable bars..nice food and drinks list with honest staff..Fiona McCools and Scotland Yard and next door (almost) to the Jersey there is C'est What..great beer list all canadian micro breweries..chocolate porter..drool... and at least its not Faux Brit..
This restaurant had quite possible the worst service I've ever experienced at a restaurant.
I ordered a Greek Salad without tomatoes or onions, it came with tomato, so the lady took it back to the kitchen to me remade. ( Not a big deal) Then I got the salad back which had clearly been dumped out and picked apart. I took the first bite and wrapped all around my mouth was a huge knot of hair. I showed it to the waitress and she took it back to the kitchen. She then comes back to me and says that it could have been her hair, as if that would make it better. She barely apologized and was extremely defensive. Then she came back to the table and said that it could have been a corn husk because everything is prepared together.
After looking at the menu and realizing there was no corn on it, I asked the lady what food had corn in it. She quickly responded " The specials" When I asked what the special of today was she said, " Well it doesn't necessarily have to be from today." The rest of the time she didn't even ask us how our food was and we had to ask another waiter to give us our cheque because she wouldn't even talk to us. It was horrible service!! Not to mention unclean if food from previous days would still be on the counter! It was totally hair and they couldn't even admit it.
Turns out this lady was the manager! Horrible experience! Rude and Unapologetic.
Finally came home from travelling and we had to go straight to The Jersey Giant from the airport for my favourite Cubano sandwich and wings. Better than we remembered and the staff always treats us like gold -fabulous pub, I wish they were all over the world!
Bars in Toronto can be a very similar affair and its the quality of the staff that makes a pub somewhere you want to visit time and time again...after one visit to this pub I doubt I could ever be convinced to go again..
This afternoon I witnessed a local gentleman ask the barmaid for a beer only to realise that she hadn't returned his change from a previous drink..rather than apologise she "threw" the $5 onto the bar..he sheepishly left to drink his beer outside with scowls baring down on him from the people at the bar..
poor barmaid, bad customer
On receiving our three beers the barmaid decided not to return our change and assumed that 30% was adequate for her "fantastic" service...rather than go through the embarrassment dished out to the previous patron we left as well..we shall not return..
I have ran bars and restaurants in London UK for over 15 years and I know how important tips are to staff..I'm a firm 15 percenter in Toronto regardless of how poor some service can be...but I also understand the importance of repeat custom...perhaps a lesson the management of this establishment need to learn when training new incumbents..
go elsewhere would be my advice...there are countless "British" style pubs in the area that let you decide the tip..cheers
This place is amazing. Its our "regular" and we have never had anything bad to eat. Although the booze puts your bill up in the prince range, the food is a good bang for your buck. Go for brunch on the weekends for the giant Belgin waffle or anytime for the all day breakfast.
I feel in love with the staff, Mainly Stu. Very friendly and genuine. I was in Toronto for only 5 days. I went here my 2nd day. I enjoyed myself so much that I returned before I left. Service was excellent, food was good and very reasonable. With a staff that makes you feel welcome, and treats you as an old friend. I will return to Toronto just to Go here again!
Also, on our way out we got to talk to another employee there who runs back and forth the whole time, this fella told us about how poor the barmaid treats her coworkers as well, for example she’s well known for not tipping out to coworkers, passing daily duties like roll-ups to her coworkers etc.
I doubt the feasibility of the survival of this establishment if they continue to keep her as an employee. I would suggest replacing the barmaid with somebody who treats their customers with more respect.
Perhaps the hard working fella who seemed more capable in handling the job than the barmaid
We visited about 3 years ago now, and my memory is that the food was great, as was the atmosphere. What I recall best of all was that they had the very best chocolate martini that I have ever had. The ingredients were listed on the menu, and although seemingly simple, NOBODY makes them like that anywhere else I have been.
