Kensington Natural Bakery & Cafe
You definitely will not catch this Bloor and Bathurst restaurant using any genetically altered ingredients. This is no-nonsense, low-fat, all natural cooking for the health conscious. Everything, including soups and salad dressings, is made from scratch, without sugar or preservatives. The decor is natural, nothing fancy, but solid and functional. As for the menu, the names are familiar; the ingredients? Tofu Hamburgers, Bean Curd Hotdogs and Rice Noodle Lasagna are among the dishes. The combo special is a choice of three, from a list of 16, vegetarian salads.
My favourite bakery in the whole city. I can't advertise this place enough. GREAT for people on a budget. Entirely Vegan/Vegetarian bakery and they don't use sugar either (they use only pure maple syrup to sweeten.) Huge selection of pastries, danishes, croissants, cookies, breads, bagels, squares, brownies, pie slices and whole pies! Not to mention that they have a very decent selection of lunch/dinner foods too. And everything is dairy and egg-free, and they also have baked goods that are wheat and gluten-free.
So the ambience isn't exactly posh, but it's great to stop by for a quick bite or goods to take home with you. (You can take home anything you buy there and pop in the freezer to use later).
Kensington bakery will not impress you with its ambiance, I wouldn't recommend taking your date there the first time you two love birds go out. When you look into your pocket and find only a five dollar bill you'll be happy to know you can sit down and have a huge piece of Tofu Lasagna with salad and soup and have a quarter left over to call your mom and tell her how much you love her. Great vegan food at prices even Buddha himself, after giving away all of his worldly possessions can still afford, right in the heart of the University of Toronto.
