Morton's of Chicago
After a day of discovery at the Royal Ontario Museum, Queen's Park and the Annex area, take a walk around the block to this popular Park Hyatt Hotel steakhouse that combines the comfortable with the classy. Surrounded by dark wood, rich leathers, and crisp white linens, a waiter details the menu by displaying the actual ingredients. If the appetite is there, order the house specialty, a 24-oz Porterhouse Steak - a mouthwatering delight.
The Toronto location of this high end U.S. steak chain certainly does not disappoint. It offers first rate steaks which were cooked to the liking of each member of our party. The atmosphere was very nice and was certainly consistent with what one would expect for a high end restaurant in Yorkville (Toronto's answer to Beverly Hills). The desserts were excellent and the service was attentive, although somewhat less polished then one might expect for a restaurant in this price range.
Anyone venturing to Morton's should appreciate that the prices are very high. It would be difficult, although not impossible to find a more expensive restaurant anywhere in the City. We paid almost $80 very ordinary entry level Beringer Carbernet that could be found for less than $20 at any Canadian liquor store (probably less than $10 in the U.S.). As is often the case at high end steak places, the sides (salads, potatoes etc.) were extra. Frequent visitors to such establishments are not surprised by this, but those who are regulars at the Keg are in for sticker shock.
To be completely honest, although Morton's is an excellent experience, I would not say that the quality justifies charging more than twice as much as the Keg or similiar steak places.
The Toronto location of Morton's is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys steak and is not concerned about the bill. In fairness, this description could also apply to similiar establishments such as Ruth Chris or Harbour 60. To be fair, these kind of places are a luxury and priced accordingly.
