Hoops Sports Bar & Grill

Description

Located around the corner from the now derelict Maple Leaf Gardens, this bar was hit hard when the Maple Leafs moved on down to the Air Canada Centre. But the bar has re-invented itself as a friendly neighbourhood place where you can have a drink and some pub grub without having to put up with the jostling crowds. Aside from the usual bistro-bar grill menu, seafood and Fajitas are also offered. And, of course, there are the 12 different beers on tap.

terrible service but great food
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/29/09
My wife and I went to the Hoop's between the Rodger's center and the Air Canada center. We had no problem getting a table. Once we sat down, we waited, another table was seated beside us. A waitress walked by and took the other tables drink order. And we waited for about fifteen minute. I know because I was watching the countdown clock for the next Leaf's game. The a waitress saw us looking around and took our drink order. We ordered 2 pints Steam whistle. She came back a few minutes later and said they were out or something. This bar/restaurant is located right next to the brewery and the brewery does deliver. Anyways we ordered 2 other pints. waited about 7 minutes. At this time we were thinking of just getting up and leaving and we should have. But we stayed. Our drinks came just abit after and the waitress was gone. Did take our order. Just dropped the drinks and gone. As we waited for her to come back I noticed a lot of frustrated people. I also noticed the table that showed up after us was already eating. They aparently had a good waitress. When our waitress came back she started to take our order and then walked away to talk to another waitress (in the middle of my wife ordering). Thankfully she didn't come back and another waitress took our order and if I knew at this time she wouldn't be back either I would have ordered another beer. We waited another 20 minutes. For two wraps with fries. It was brought out by a totally different waitress. Dropped on our table and she was gone. At this time my beer was gone and I was drinking my wife's. I placed my empty glass on the ledge beside our table for all to see. There it sat for about 5 minutes. When the girl that brought us our food sa it and asked if I'd like another. I asked if they had fixed the Steam Whistle problem. She said yes, so I ordered a Beer. At this time I was done my food, My beer and my wife's beer. The couple at the other table was had been sitting for about five minute. Waiting for their waitress to take their credit card. So they could get of to the Leafs game. Just around then the third waitress who had brought us our food came back an said that she was sorry but there was no Steam Whistle And asked if I'd like something else. At this time I was done waiting or so I thought. Said no thank you and asked for our bill or bill came up to $58.66. Which was not that bad considering the food was really good. So I waited for to come and take my debit card so I could pay. And I waited. Then I thought this is enough and I walked to the otherside of the restaurant to the ATM. As I got to the ATM the girls had noticed me leave and had chased me down with the debit machine.I think she thought I might be taking off or something. Not my thing. I told her no thanx and took out $80 w/a $2 withdrawl fee. Then walked over to my table and left $60 on the table. Don't get me wrong I beleive in tipping well for good service. Very well for excellent service. But instead of causing a scene in a restaurant by talking to a manager and getting them to comp something off my dinner. I pay for what I ordered. I will never eat there again and would not recommend this place as a stop before the game. If you do stay at the bar. Nick from Niagara

Is HOOPS for real?
By Muse is my Muse, 10/9/08
I went to this place as its very close to my house and I went with a party of 6. We had to pay for some event that we didn't care to watch but we wanted to sit down and eat so we did so anyways. The server came to our table and I'm not sure how but she messed up on bringing us pitchers of beer, but she did. Then she didn't come back to take our order for food and when we flagged her down to tell her what we want, she kept asking to see the menu so that she could write down the items we wanted .... she had no clue of how to spell anything on the menu and kept asking US what the meal came with so she could write it down. Anyways, the food came about 1.5 hrs later and was completely WRONG. When we told the server that the plates did not have the right side dishes, she said that this is how we serve them now (even though we ordered something completely different). We told her to get the manager which also took at least 30-45min and then when he didn't come by, I went to look for him. I found him goofing off behind the bar instead of helping his staff (who seriously needed all the help they could get). I told him that nothing had been correct on our orders and he told us that he would re-order everything and send it out. I told him that this was all a joke and if he thinks we are waiting another 1.5 hrs for the replacement meals, he should reconsider his career choice .. He started to get heated with us (the patrons) and said that we were being too hard on his waitress (who couldn't spell HAMBURGER). I explained to him that we are not paying a cent for this horrible lack of service and he didn't seem to care at all. I guess this has happened to him before where people are so disgusted with the service and staff that they leave without paying. I would highly recommend NOT ever going to Hoops as it is a disgrace of a bar and I have no idea why they even bother to have a menu as they can't seem to get anything right. After reading other reviews, I see I am not the only one who was treated poorly and was given horrible service at Hoops. Stay clear people!!

Visual Dullards Running Hoops
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/18/08
I was at Hoops yesterday. They have widescreen TVs that are 16:9. But Hoops owner/management/staff do - take a regular non wide screen TV feed (4:3) and then stretch the regular TV picture 50% in width. So now the basketball is shaped like a football and basketball players look like they are 5 foot tall and 5 foot wide. hahaha Same with NHL hockey. The goal looks like it is 3 foot high and all players look 4 foot tall and weigh 500 pounds. Then if they have SCORE Network on - it's even worse. SCORE squeezes the picture upwards by 20% or so - in order to run the advertising banners underneath non stop. So by stretching a SCORE feed 50% to fill a wide screen TV - the basketball then looks like a Frisbee. Hahaha

Definitely will go back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/14/07
Our server was great, very personalble and attentive, we never had to wait to order anything. The appetizers are great, worth going there for! I went on a Thursday night and the karaoke was awesome especially the DJ...he added to the experience!! It was a fun and entertaining evening and I can't wait to go back. I think this place is great just to relax and have a drink or to really get involved in the entertainment. If you are a sports fan this is the place to be!

Not going back
By Bob McGregor, 10/15/07
Ok, I have given the Hoops on Yonge Street my LAST chance last night. We are used to having to wait for service there, but it has gotten worse and worse. I am in the restaurant business, and knew by watching that some of these girls are in waaaaay over their heads. If that is the level of server quality, they need to hire about ten more. We sat ourselves, after being ignored at the door and waited and waited and waited. The table next to us got three or four visits from the waitress (going back to fetch single drinks at the bar, etc...) while she studiously ignored looking in our direction. Finally we waved at her, and about five minutes later she came over. I asked for, and got menus and that was the last we saw of her for another long wait after she got into a conversation with a man at the pool table. Combined with the EARSPLITTING volume of music (this is a sportsbar, not a dance club) we got sick of waiting and stood up and walked out. Went around the corner to Frans and had an EXCELLENT wings and ribs combo dinner on special last night. Hoops is entirely off my list and I live in the neighbourhood.

Traet You Like A Guest Instead of a Customer
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/8/07
Sandra and Darrel really got it right. Toronto is an International City and they make sure that us "out-of-towners" feel as comfortable and at home as any "local". From asking you where you're from (when they detect an accent) to providing you with at least one TV of your native sports programming (if possible). The wait staff are young, attractive and ready to serve you w/o being overbearing. Partron conversation is lively and genuine with most of the discussions evolving around sports (Duh) and the level of Karaoke performance on Weds. and Thurs. (which is usually very good). The burger I ordered was very good and prepared just the way I asked, with the fries being a pleasent surprise. Again, I have to say that Sandra and Darrel really understand how to make you feel at home and appreciate their guest (during my visit they had a "customer appreciation" night and provided everyone who came in FREE drink coupons of your choice. The only downside to my visit were those insufferable Yankee fans rooting for their "overpriced and underperforming" team. PS If you're really lucky you may be treated to one of Sandra's home made bakery goods which adds to the guest experience...Keep up the good work guys...

I will never go there again.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/19/07
I had a horrible experience there. My waitress was slow, the food was gross and I saw a cockroach behind the bar. I wonder what else they are hiding back there. I almost barfed. I will never go there ever again. I wasted my time and money.

Laid back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/4/07
Lots of t.vs to get the best view of the game(s). Large interior, room for large groups. The service was good and the noise level was perfect..not too loud but loud enough to feel excited about the game.
