Description

This restaurant, perched high atop the downtown Marriott Hotel, offers some of the region's most magnificent views. As the restaurant slowly revolves, you will see impressive streetscapes of downtown Ottawa. The menu features local interpretations of world cuisine and highlights Canadian ingredients such as Fresh Seafood and Alberta beef. Vegetarian foods are also available, as is an extensive wine list and a Sunday brunch buffet. Prices are not for the faint of wallet.

Well worth it...

We go to "Le Merlot" every year for special occasions and we are always pleased with the food, quality and service. Ask for Simon, he's great!

A Chefs Experience
By ,
I dined for the first time at The Merlot, on Oct.12th, and would definetely go back. I had heard of the new menu, so, along with a close friend, decided to go and try the new menu out. It did not dissapoint. For starters I had the mushroom soup. It's name is something different, which I can't remember, but it was exquisite. Very tasteful, and well presented in tasteful new china servers which were taken from the table to avoid clutter. Attention to detail was appreciated. The main course was the 14oz Angus beef rib-eye steak. The steak was fantastic and my only complaint, if it is even that the steak was a tad dry in the very middle, hardly even worth mentioning. Other than that, the steak was one of the best I've ever had. The demi was very good. Not too salty, a risk with demi. The veg on the side was nicely done, and the potatoes were rationed perfectly. To finish things off, my friend had the Creme Brule and I the ice cream and sherbert combination. Both were very good. I am certain I got the names wrong of the deserts, but it's the review that counts, right? Service was very good as well. The waiter was very attentive, and both the Chef and the restaurant manager came to see us at our table to ensure the experience was a memorable one.

Finally....
By ,
...not my parent's revolving restaurant! After hearing about the restaurant, I wasn't sure what to expect--the "revolving restaurant" concept is one that I had never really experienced but had always associated with people of a different age bracket! My dining partner and I were really happy, though, when we sat down and were greeted by a very happy and knowledgeable server--someone who obviously enjoys his job. We then reviewed the menu and I actually couldn't decide because I had so many great choices--not something I usually experience. After choosing the Albert Beef 2 Ways for a main course and the Chipotle Squash Soup for my appetizer, we were able to enjoy well-timed service and, of course, a great atmosphere. The soup was presented shortly after, using a unique tea pot which was poured into the amazing white bowl in front of me. The aromas were incredible and really were only surpassed by the taste of the soup--perfect for a cool autumn evening out. My beef arrived perfectly cooked and I reluctantly ruined the detailed presentation to eat it! It was a struggle to save space for the chocolate souffle but it was worth taking my time. I will be going back to Merlot again in the very near future because I have to share this food experience with some good friends--it was a perfect night out.

Terrible
The fish was not fresh, the service was rude and the coffee was the worst that I've ever experienced. Avoid this place and try Le Cafe or Savanah Cafe for food and service that are always excellent.

The view is well worth it!!
By ,
One of few local Ottawa restaurants that boosts the ambiance and service one would expect from a highend establishment without the overwhelming cost and pretentiousness. The concept is grillhouse but the presentation and taste is still on the fine dining scale. Service staff are impecable complete with one of the most unique coat check personalities I have ever encountered. A sweet elderly woman with a sassy disposition (don't forget to ask how her day is). If that's not enough to tantilize then consider the view. No other restaurant in our city can show you in 45 minutes a panoramic view of our beautiful city. Capturing the Chaudier Falls, Parliment, the downtown market right back again. The most magnificant time to dine is anywhere around 6 until 7 when you can view the sun set behind the Gatineau mountains. No need for a special occasion...the dinner will become one...and the view is well worth it!!!
