The funkiest of Ottawa's Asian restaurants, this colourful Chinatown eatery offers a fusion of Cantonese, Szechuan and Asian fare, along with creative lighting, modern art and a wild collection of art deco furnishings. Most days the restaurant caters to a large and varied crowd of casually dressed patrons, including families but things turn trendier on Thursday evenings with a DJ spinning everything from hip hop to jazz. The restaurant features a noodle bar and an eclectic selection of seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. The bar is fully licensed.
I walked a bit of Chinatown's annual art show, Remixed Art in Chinatown and came across Shanghai Restaurant on the list of participating art venues . I really enjoyed the welcoming servers even though I was not staying to eat! I went back a week later with friends and we all enjoyed the waitresses recommendations. Vegetarian Hot & Sour Soup - Best I've ever had! Dumplings, very tasty and spicy sauce on the side . Thai beef basil with sweet pineapple with rice was amazing.
Shanghai is easily becoming my favorite late night hang out too with jazz bands, dj's and special menu's after dark.
I called in a late night to put in a large order for lunch for about 30 people the following day.. I couldnt have got better service! The gentleman on the line made suggestions, was extremely polite and took his time to help me from the chicken fried rice down to the chop sticks! The order arrived a few minutes late, but that was quickly forgotten because the food tasted great! Everyone seemed happy about the meal, and so was I . Definately recommend for catering your small meeting/event!
We live in the neighbourhood and often go there for dinner. Great fun atmosphere, run by a family who are established in the area, all good, except...
My son pointed out the cockroach walking up the wall. Ugh!
I pointed this out to the waitress who was serving us and all she said was "and?". It was sort of like, your point is? Now, if the wait staff are not that concerned about the bug problem, what do you think the owners think? Wanna bet that the bugs walk across the prepping/cooking areas?
My family has always enjoyed going there and I like the family atmosphere but, honestly, if the roach problem is there, it likely hints at an underlying problem with sanitation that has to be addressed.
Get rid of the bugs, get clean in the kitchen and we will return. Enough said.
A modern asian restaurant , tucked away amongst dozens of other chinese / korean / vietnamese restaurants . This one stands out amongst the rest, a little oasis of GREAT FOOD , atmosphere , service . etc. The DUMPLINGS are AMAZING , We tried the APP. special of the night , SOFT SHELL CRAB ! AMAZING as well ! pared with a local wine from the Niagra Region. The overall meal experience was Outstanding !
Visiting Ottawa from Toronto. I'm amazed at this little restaurant. The staff was very friendly, we felt right at home. The meal was nothing less than fantastic ! ! ! To top it all off we stayed for drinks and karaoke and had an amazing time. There is nothing like this in Toronto. Great job Shanghai restaurant, you made our visit to Ottawa very memorable.
GREAT food, and really awesome atmosphere. The service is superb, and it makes a great date restaurant. The restaurant is on the small side, which makes it a much more personal experience. Being a repeat customer, the waiters/waitresses always act like we're good friends coming in for a visit. I would recommend it to anyone!
I visited Shanghai in November 2005 because it was so highly recommended on this site.
The ambiance is cute and relaxed with good music and interesting tables, candles etc.
The service and food, however, were another story. Our waitress was not very attentive and we waited for food and water throughout the evening.
Also the food was ok but very very oily.
If you don't mind oil it is okay, and the ambance is amusing and nice.
