Description

This traditional Chinese restaurant is the unofficial epicentre of Ottawa's Chinatown district. During brunch, Dim Sum is served, an especially popular attraction on weekends—the friendly wait staff stops by each table and offers a myriad of items from which patrons can pick and choose. Each selection is then added to the bill at the table. In addition to Dim Sum, the restaurant's menu reads like an encyclopaedia of Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine.

Delicious food-Attentive Service
By ,
The Yangtze is now the only place we go to in Ottawa for Chinese food. We have been eating there since 2007. All of the others we have tried pale in comparison. The food here is absolutely excellent--served fresh, hot, properly spiced and promptly. The waiters are very attentive throughout the meal. And the decor is inviting and attractive. I love it!

Dimsum Not like it used to be
By ,
We were seated by the window at the end: by the time the dimsum carts reached us, there's not much to pick. All food dishes were luke warm especially the congee. Tired of waiting we ordered a noodle dish and the rice noodle was not cooked properly: still hard. It was not until 45 mns later that the carts got hot food reaching us: it was too late...The dumpling wrapping was thick and hard: look like it's from mass production frozen stuff. It was the worst experience... Do their waiters know how to smile? Looks like no one is in charge of controlling the quality of the food there. In one of the dumpling there's a couple of hair and we mentioned it to the waiter: just a nod ... Everything was bad....It used to be one of the best restaurant in Ottawa.

I have been going to Yangtze for a long time now and the food is great. The menu is very diverse and offers something for even the pickiest of eaters.

Awfull place, awfull people
By ,
We tend to go out for Dim Sum weekly, and had frequented this place for years because it was local for us, and few alternatives existed. But, while the food was passable, the behavior of staff and management is dreadful. When you scratch the surface a little, you discover that staff are in a constant state of fear. Its evident that management are so abusive to their employees, that the employees now mirror that behavior to everyone else. For management, you are not a guest be served, you are simply an obstacle to their fleecing the next customer. After finally objecting to their awful behavior, and experiencing their abuse first-hand, we have never been back, and as a consequence discover establishments far better the Yangtze, that have friendly, well meaning staff. The Beijing Tian Run is our current favorite, and we certainly recommend them.

Good food and reasonable price
By ,
I've been to many different cities / countires and loved visiting the Chinatown restaurants. I would rate Yangtze the best value and food. Their service is average but not poor. They are not a fancy place but more of a family restaurant. The main focus is you order from the menu and great food appears very quickly. Hot and delicious! That really is all I ask for after a long day at meetings. I will go back again when I have my next meeting in Ottawa.

Love This Restaurant!
By ,
This is definitely my all-time favorite Chinese restaurant! Wide variety of wonderfully prepared dishes, generous portions, lots of Asian customers(usually a good sign), fabulous dim sum with the traditional serving carts. Prices are very reasonable as well. This is a large, busy, restaurant with efficient if somewhat impersonal service. They do a great job considering the high volume of fabulous food they dish out every day. My husband and I moved here from Toronto a few years ago. We love Asian food, and nothing we know of in the Toronto area measures up to the Yantzee for $$ value and the overal experience. One of the great things about moving to Ottawa was discovering the Yantzee!

Beware of Yangtze - POOR service
By ,
We put a deposit down to hold our wedding there for June 28, 2008. We recently decided to move our venue since they are really not able to cater to Chinese and French food. So we tried to cancel over 9 months ahead of time. We suggested that they open the date again and give us back the deposit if they find someone who wants the date. Instead they refused to meet in the middle. We signed no contract that said that the deposit is non-refundable and we have not cancelled officially in writing yet they have cancelled our date and refuse to give us back our deposit. At first I was willing to just take gift certificates but now I do not want to visit their restaurant any more because of the extremely poor service. I have filed a complaint with the BBB agency. BEWARE of this dirty restaurant.

Bad experience
By ,
The servers were very rude from the beginning to the end! We got the food that we didn't order. When we ask question about our dessert, we got the reply in rude tone: "So do you want it or not!" Our plates and chopsticks were taken away when we were still waiting for one newly ordered dim-sum...
