Economy Shoe Shop Cafe & Bar
The Shoe, as it is called, is known for its food and interesting clientele. The menu is informal and offers daily specials; pasta and salads are big and there's always an interesting lunch special. The establishment is united by one long outdoor patio shouldered by gigantic sunflowers that grow out of wall sconces and twine up around street lamps. Tuesday nights there are readings from the local literati, sometimes there's live music, and the rest of the time it's just the place to be.
I went there this past summer and loved it. It seems to be a local cougar hot spot, or that's what it seemed like anyways. Easy place to meet attractive older women, have some drinks and sometimes more. I'll be back for sure
The Economy Shoe Shop has always been known for good ambience but extremely slow service and not the best food. We waited for 45 minutes for a veggie burger (the WORST I have ever had and didn`t even come with anything, had to pay extra for a side dish). A fast food place can and does do a better job then them. And the "dessert" options, well there were 2. Some cheesecake and apple crumble. We ordered apple crumble and it tasted like the sole of someone's shoe. I've never been so disappointed by a "restaurant" in my life. Will never eat there again, waste of my money and time. Oh and tell the servers to get some manners, when reaching across someone and never saying excuse me. Unfriendly staff. Will make sure to tell everyone how bad it is. Oh and it's never cool seeing the owner drive off drunk. Good way to run a business. Luckily Halifax has alot of other options.
When I used to come to Halifax 7 years ago I found this place and thought it was great. We used to make this a supper stop for our annual Halfiax trip for Nachos and beer. I moved to Halifax 2 years ago and have been there 2 times. Both times the service and food were really bad. The last time it took us over 1 hour to get cold nachos that the cheese wasn't even melted and I drank two beer while I was waiting which shouldn't happen. It's a great place for the decor but I will only stop in for a beer and to show tourists not get food. It's sucha shame that this place went from great to bad in a short time. Something really needs to change with this place.
Service is terrible, it took us 10 minutes before out server even realized we were there and we waited an hour and a half for our food and it didn't even come
we ended up just leaving
Their sandwiches don't even come with a side of anything
I will not go there again
The Economy Shoe shop has a unique and appealing atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else in Halifax. The service is generally laid back (i.e. slow for those who look at it that way) and the servers have often been less than friendly, however there are always exceptions. Food is on a whole moderate with certain dishes being outstanding and others subpar.
the service wasn't the greatest, althought he atmosphere id fantastic. the food is fabulous, although some prices may seem a bit high, once you see the amount and equality of food you receive it makes sense.
The food at the shoeshop is generally very good. The aioli served with the roasted potatoes is to die for. The papaya salad is also really good. The only real concern with the menu is that it is fairly short and does not cater well to vegetarian clientele which leaves me ordering the same three things every time. Those three things are always wonderful, but it would be nice to have options. It is also a little pricey for a student budget or young family, but is in a good price range for similar restaurants in the area.
Atmosphere is obviously the key selling point. You can pick a room based on your mood and find something for everybody. There is also an abundance of choice in the realm of beer and wine if said mood could use a lift.
Service has been my only real issue with the Shoeshop. You are often left hanging for extended periods. I feel (and it's an opinion share by several of my friends) that this is a tactic to increase bar sales. Just be sure to plan on an hour and a half at lease if you're heading in after 6 PM.
The decor is dusty, dirty and dark. The service is poor and slow. We waited for an hour for our dinner and what was supposed to be Marsala chicken was a fried boring chicken dish (no Marsala to speak of)..grey chicken, undercooked rice and tasteless vegetables. When we expressed concerns abouyt the dinner, the waitress offered to send the manager..who never appeared and we left the place disgruntled and hungry...no apologies and no attempt to correct the situation by anyone.
This place is defintely living on over-hype.
The atmosphere in this restaraunt is just fabulous- an extremely interesting decor which is great for a romantic date or a fun, group outing. The food was a unique take on traditional pub food and very tasty and reasonably priced, though the drinks were not cheap!
I would definitely reccomend checking it out.
Nachos were out of this world - great quality chips and cheese. Some of the best I have ever had. The entrees were poorly done. Heavily soaked in sauce, had the appearance of a high school cafeteria meal. Sloppy supper meal... Go for nachos and a few drinks, but head to another downtown hot spot for your main meal.
