Holy Rosary Cathedral

Description

With its asymmetrical towers, downtown's Holy Rosary Cathedral is a perfect example of Gothic Revival architecture. The pointed window and doorway arches, vaulted ceiling, exterior sandstone carving and tracery stained glass windows all reflect the Gothic character. Also notable is the full ring of the bells. All eight hang in the 66-meter east tower. This was the first church in Canada to ring a peal of Grandshire Triples to honour Dominion Day (now called Canada Day) in 1911. It lasted two hours and 59 minutes! Admission is free, though donations are accepted.

I always wanted to attend sunday masses
By ,
I like to attand masses, it's because you will be attracted of the beautiful architecture of the church, a quiete place, you can pray solemly and friendly invironment. Dislike, the small store where you buy prayer books & some religious items, is not allways open even only after each every mas.

Like a home base
By ,
It is like a home base and we found it very refreshing to see young and old coming in to just spend time with their Lord at any given time of the day. Definitely something is very much alive here - whether it is their sermons or just people attracting people. It is very much alive and it makes you feel part of family. What is noticable is the amount of younger people attending gives you a sense of hope for the church and generations to come. There is nothing negative to comment on and we should not let a few street people "asking" for spare change discourage you. It could be our Good Lord playing His part of a "beggar" ... I am sure of that!

A Gothic Gem
By ,
Although small by European standards, by Canadian standards, Holy Rosary( Roman Catholic )Cathedral(now in its 119th year)of service to Vancouver is a real architectural gem. Sanctified by decades of prayer & service it is well worth a vist, whether you come to pray or to just peruse the sandstone and granite building now almost a century old. Renewed architecturally after Vatican 2 Council , this renovation was done tastefully and happily no structural damage was done. The Lady Chapel (to the left of the main Altar)is particularly attractive and the votive lights testify to the active reality of this being 'a house of prayer for all people'.Parking (if you do not use public transit) can be a challenge but there is paid parking nearby at the Hudson's Bay Parkade. Panhandling has turned a few people off over the years but a determined walk and a refusal to become involved in this practice that the City and Church are trying to responsibly control will eliminate this distraction. It is also possible to walk to the Christchurch( Anglican Church of Canada ) Cathedral a few blocks west on Georgia Street(Near the Hotel Vancouver) in less than 15 minutes to see another style of Church architecture-something not easily done in most places.
