Hamburger Mary's Diner
This lively diner is a top West End hangout. 60s memorabilia covers the walls and typical American diner-style chrome tables and chairs fill the room. The atmosphere is lively and festive, and you should expect line-ups on weekends. The menu offers everything from burgers to burritos, all in generous portions. You can't visit without having one of its legendary milkshakes, but for something stronger, Daiquiris and margaritas are also available.
While the outdoor seating area was nice, the shakes had very little flavor, and the burgers were over-cooked. All the burgers have a barbeque sause on them; couldn't cover the dried out burger. Fries are thin and good.
On the plus: good ambience with lots of fun neon and decorations.
Minus: Service was polite but unfriendly, with no energy. Staff didn't smile. Food took about 25 minutes to arrive which is quite long for a burger when the place is not busy at all.
Food quality: The clam chowder soup was tasteless (I have had better stuff from a can.) The cheeseburgers and chicken burgers were boring and lacked any zing. Note: We wonder why a hamburger place cannot make a good burger.
Overall: This place used to be good, and could be good again someday if they were actually trying and put at least half effort into it.
