Vij's Restaurant, Vancouver

Fun, delicious, and unique, Vij's is a wonderful place to experience Indian fusion at its best. Expect big crowds and a long wait, but the restaurant is well worth it.

Busy place and for good reason. The food is not the usual indian restaurant fare but variations on traditional themes with delicate spices and flavors. Small menu but well thought out. This stands out amongst the best of many Indian restaurants I have visited around the world. If you cannot get in, which is likely as no reservations are accepted try the small cafe next door which is also owned by the same person. Vij himself ensures everyone is happy.

We went to Vij's the other night after we had heard good things. Nice restaurant and everthing but the service was slow and the food gotto us cold. Our drinks were late as well. Definitely not going back !

We were here with a friend, a Canadian of Indian descent. We asked for whatever the chef thought would be best. It was fabulous. The French fries they served in the bar for those waiting to be seated were spectacular, spicy and crunchy, would love the recipe.

I was dissatisfied with the poor choice of vegetarian dishes offered at Vij's. The vegetarian dish I ordered was very bland and uninspired, especially compared to the amazing flavours of the lamb dish my partner ordered. I also missed being able to order samosas or pakoras as appetizers. The menu seems to be a bit meat-obsessed. I will not be returning.

I loved the atmosphere. And it has a great wine list. It truely is a great restaurant, however, as a vegetarian, the options aren't that great, although they are better than most high end restaurants. Not being able to make a reservation is a bit of a pain as well as Vij's is always lined up. I reccomend getting there early. That said, the owner is always good about taking around free samples of snacks and appies to people waiting for a seat.

Vij doesn't take reservations, but then he really doesn't have to: There's a line outside his door every single night. Patrons huddled under Vij's violet neon sign are treated to complimentary tea and papadums (a thin bread made from lentils). Inside, the decor is as warm and subtle as the seasonings, which are all roasted and ground by hand, then used with studied delicacy. The menu changes monthly, though some of the more popular entrees remain constants. I had the Prawns in the Mango sauce and It was a perfect combination of flavos a must have appitizer. As for the meal I love every single dish on the menu so just go with what sounds good at the time and I am sure you will find out why vijs is the best in vancouver.

I have never been to a restaurant where the fodd was packed with so much flavor and every bite was meant to be savoured and remembered. It is a good enough reason to relocate to Vancouver. Finally an Indian restaurant that is original. Tabla in New York is the only other restaurant in North America that comes close as far as Indian restaurants go. But comparing it to an Indian restaurant is doing Vij's injustice. If this were in Cambridge I am sure it would rival Dali when it comes to the wait.

After several costly and dismal-to-average meals in Vancouver, we struck gold at Vij's. It took us figuring out how to drive there from our centrally located Vancouver hotel, but the drive was easy and, furthermore, worth it. We had to wait an hour and a half for a table, but that was worth it, too! And we drank wonderful wine and got plenty of free appetizer snacks while we waited. The lamb popsicles are probably the best meat this former vegetarian has ever tasted! And the owner came around to ask if we liked our meal. Lively and lovely atmosphere; most highly recommended.
