The specialty here is pizza, baked in the brick oven for which the restaurant derives its name. "Il Forno" is Italian for, you guessed it, "the oven." There are the meat lover's pizza (Patrizio), for cheese lovers (Quattro Formaggi) and Pescatore for seafood lovers, topped with mussels, clams, shrimp, and octopus. There are also several pasta dishes on the menu, as well as veal, chicken, and seafood house specialties. Located in the Jasper Gates plaza, Il Forno is bright, airy, and open, and it welcomes families.
I have only great things to say about this restaurant.
The service was wonderful. The ambience just great.
The food...well I had the lamb shank.
I have just been on a cruise where I had lamb shank and thought it the best I ever tasted. However, Il Forno surpassed it.
Thank you for a memorable evening. I WILL be back!
This place is great! I can't believe the negative reviews I've read on this site. It's absurd. All I can say is that Il Forno is truly an awesome restaurant. If you want authentic Italian food, and genuine service, go to Il Forno. I think that those who are commenting on how expensive they think it is at Il Forno, know nothing about food cost and that quality is not cheap. I can say I would rather pay 2 dollars more for an awesome meal, and an all around great time, than go to some chain, have some boring meal and get treated like a number. You don't have to be a genius to recognize a good quality restaurant...apparently those nay-sayers are not very bright!!
Keep up the good work Il Forno. My friends, family, business associates and I will definitely be back!!
The atmosphere is nice and casual. However, because of the poor service and average pasta dishes, I would not go back. Our server seemed to neglect our table of 3 altogether, and it took a very long time from the time we sat down to get our drinks and food. It was disappointing that the table next to us who showed up 30 minutes later than us and served by the same server got their food before ours. Would have liked to have coffee and desert after dinner, but with the wait time and the server not even offering, we were turned off. Good service is what makes half of the dining experience--- you need to work on it Il Forno!
Me and 12 other people from work decided to go to Il Forno for lunch yesterday. We had the worst service ever! First of all, the food wasn't anything special, I could've made something better at home. The service we received was horrendous! Once it came time to pay the bill, some of us paid cash, some paid debit and some paid with credit card. The waitress complained about it the whole time saying we were making her life difficult and while some of us are paying, she complains to her co-workers right in front of us!! Then as we were about to leave she said in a very rude tone "You can't have a large group coming back here unless you all pay cash!" She said it in such a manner like it was a privilege for us to be there! Worst service ever and I will never go back there again and neither will any of my colleagues! Stay away from this place!
Served raw chicken - did not correct the situation sufficient when I asked to have it microwaved (I was being nice).
Nothing was done to correct the situation. Worst experience ever - always check your chicken if you are eating there!
I came to edmonton in 1980. first thing i heard...'you have to try sheppa's" ralph, his wife and mom made great food. for 26 years i knew i would get a great tasting meal. Sadly Ralph retired..i don't blame him..all the best my friend. The new owner must have not only bought the restaurant but also the recipes, since the menu looks vaguely familiar. So what did they do??? They raise the prices by $5 $6 dollars on each item and then procede to substitute inferior ingredients..for example: plain white mushrooms where before there were oyster mushrooms...little things like that which really make a difference. The service too is sub-par.
this isn't the real il forno..it's gone with Ralph. Just one less restaurant on my list. Even if the owner wises up...how would i know? i'll not spend my money there ever again.
I feel bad that what I have to say is not favourable, but here it goes. I popped in there the other day to purchase a gift certificate. It was my first time in the restaurant. It took about 10 minutes to simply purchase a gift certificate. All the guy had to do was sign and date it, but used the excuse that he had to fill it in. It was just before lunch, about 11am, not busy at all. Look you got my $$ for the gift certificate. When I mentioned that I was in a hurry (hate to admit it but I left my kids in a vehicle, no keys, not running), he didn't seem to be concerned and never apologized for taking so long. Needless to say it left a bad taste in my mouth. The certificates are for a relative, I am not in a rush to eat there myself, I'll spend my hard earned $$ where they might be better appreciated.
I love the food at Il Forno, The pasta is always amazing. I was really sad to find out that the ownership had changed, but because it is my favorite pasta place went back .I was shocked to see that the menu was way different and that everything had gone up in price by about 5 -8 $$. I love the pasta but paying 16.99 for marinara pasta with no meat in it is a little steep. If the prices went back down and they had a couple more servers on a friday night this place would be even better then it is. The food is still really great and the reason i continue to go back.
Il Forno truly is one of Edmonton's best and most authentic restaurants. I recently ate at Il Forno with my entire family (we're a big family) and we were so impressed with the food and the service. Anna, the new owner, was her delightful self and her son Stephan is well on his way to becoming a restaurant guru.
It was a special occasion for my family, and we left feeling fulfilled in every way.
Although the food was a bit more expensive than it used to be, every single dish we had was well worth it!
Finding quality Italian food in Edmonton is hard...unless you go to Il Forno!
Thanks Il Forno, and well done!!!!
