Nice Track, Rough Around the Edges
Unlike many courses in the Calgary area, Wintergreen is an excellent track well sheltered from the wind from it numerous large spruce and poplar trees. The course starts you off on a challenging and long 516 yard par 5 with a long pong bordering your left, and forest on your right. The trick to starting Wintergreen is to keep the ball in the fairway to make par on the first couple of holes. Other notable challenging holes are the scenic par 3 #3, the difficult shot to the elevated blind green on number 9, the risk/reward of the long par 5 #11, the 205 yard par 3 # 15 with an elevated tee box ~200' above the green below and the very difficult par 5 #18 to close.
Wintergreen does not command a premium price for greens fees and the course shows it. The cart paths are often in rough shape. The entry way to the golf club is overgrown with weeds, and an unpaved portion of the parking lot. The clubhouse has been constructed in two stages. The newer log-home style addition is beautiful, but is attached to a very sad looking ski lodge facility. The club house is a strenous uphill walk. Over the past 2 seasons, the course has been undergoing a modest facelift with the fairways and greens in wonderful shape.
If all you are looking for is a challenging game of golf, Wintergreen is one of the better value priced courses in the region.
