Blue House Cafe
The Blue House Cafe is a good place to go if you're looking for something a little different in a dining experience. The lighting is refined and simple; the art is eclectic and the ambience, warm and inviting. It is a lively place where singers and musicians perform spirited Latin American music and original music compositions. Latin America also dominates the menu with an emphasis on fresh seafood and vegetables. The wine menu is extensive and they offer a wide selection of desserts.
I was looking for a new restaurant to take some out of town friends to and a colleague recommended the BHC.
What a wonderful night we had! We each tried something different from the menu and all had a fabulous meal.
The atmosphere was intimate, but fun and positive, and our server was great. Definetely Calgary's best-kept secret and you will want to tell all your friends about this place!
i loved everything about it the good looking weiters and gutarists and the beautiful hostes' we went on a really busy weekend and thankfully we got in. (advise call and make reservations) i got the special soup and then for dinner the seafood plater very spectacular. the friend i went with also loved it our weiter was very prasistant and our waters were always full. i would recommend this fabulous place to anyone. soo call now.
and for the people below obviously never went or they would have loved it. pust not have liked seafood and call me il take those gift certificates. HAHAHAHA
We started going to this restaurant about 6 years ago. I ordered the "Blue House Delight" which the aroma and taste were to die for. After that, they seemed to have changed the recipe, and the quality of food has been sliding ever since. We stopped going for awhile but we gave it a try again 2 days ago since I saw some recent favourable reviews on the internet and newspaper. I was extremely disappointed and I think this restaurant has hit its bottom finally.
I ordered the "loster bisque" to start. Gosh, I never had a loster bisque this poor before. The broth was wishy-washy and thin, and the color was brown like French Onion Soup. It tasted like they had put some bouillon cubes in it. The dinner rolls were overly-toasted. The crust was so hard that it scratched my mouth. My guest and husband had each a shrimp appetizer. The shrimps were very small. All these appetizers came luke-warm. By the way, it's summer right now.
For main course, my guest ordered his tuna rare, but it came out "well done". My husband's seafood combo was again lukewarm and each mussel had sand in it. My halibut was covered with a glue of tomato sauce which tasted horrible. The rice in each of our dish was still raw. I tried to wait for our waiter to come back to check on our food so that I could tell him. He never came back, nor did he check on our food, nor to see if we would like to order more wine. I eventually had to catch him by waiting outside the kitchen.
I was also very embarrassed in this experience, since we were supposed to celebrate my nephew's university graduation in this restaurant, and we wanted to treat him for a great dinner.
The waiter was apologetic about our evening and he gave us a certificate for the next visit. However, I don't think we'll have much use of it. Who would want to go through this again by spending more money in this restaurant.
My advice: go somewhere else if you want good food and a great evening.
We can always count on the Blue House to furnish us with a delightful experience. The menu is wonderful and the atmosphere is charged with positive energy and good music. The place is small and service can *sometimes* be a little slow (not always), but the servers are always knowledgeable and congenial. Dinners are always intimate and fun. The Blue House may just be NW Calgary's best-kept secret.
We live literally steps away from the Blue House and frequently order their deserts to go, not taking up a valuable space in the restaurant.
Tonight (Sat.) was my birthday celebration and we ate out at another restaurant. The Blue House wouldn't seat us at their open 8:30 seating unless we spent $20/each on food alone. I am sure that we would have exceeded $20/each with desert and drinks, but they would not accommodate us.
We understand minimum charges, but given that customers already in the restaurant may have likely stayed for the music and given our frequent stops without taking a space in the dining room, you think they would have been nice to their neighbors. Too bad.
Though I've eaten there before, I can't rank anything highly because we didn't get served.
I love everything about this restaurant...the food, the wine, the service, the live music, the setting. My husband I go there so often that the staff know us by name. The word is out...make a reservation, especially Thursday to Saturday. I know you will love this restaurant too!
I had the swordfish special. Never tried anything like it before, but decided to be adventurous. What a great meal. My friend had the bisque, and she was blown away by the flavours. Can't wait to go back.
