Wa's Japanese Restaurant
This restaurant may be tiny and unassuming but it serves up some of the best Japanese food in Calgary. The large sushi and sashimi selection is Wa's pride. All of the favourites are offered, from smoked salmon to spicy scallops—all fresh and artistically presented. The menu also includes Japanese appetizers, salads and entrees such as Don bowls, tempura, teriyaki dishes and grilled fish. Soothe your wasabi burn with some sake or Japanese beer, or with a scoop of green tea ice cream for dessert.
No complaints that the sushi is decent at Wa's, service is great, but I have to argue that it's not the best in Calgary. Try Hana Sushi on 17th avenue and 4th, very consistent with their sushi. It always looks fresh and tastes great.
Don't get me wrong Wa's is good, just not the best bang for your buck.
Wa's is by far the best place in town for sushi. Everything is splendid and always tastes so fresh. We never go anywhere else and we are never disappointed with the food there or the service. It is little gem in a big city.
Everything was wonderful. The standouts, for me, are the tempura and the salmon nigiri. The tempura is incredibly light, and the vegetables hold the perfect consitancy. The salmon nigiri is sliced perfectly, and the sashimi topping it melts in your mouth. my favourite Japanese restaurant in Calgary.
For the price and what is offered, it's definitely a place to stop by even if you're visiting Calgary. Compared to a lot of other Japanese restaurants, the price is significantly lower and the variety is top notch! Will continue to bring business their way!
I came across Wa's several years ago after moving to Calgary from Vancouver. I thought I would be deprived of fabulous sushi coming back to Alberta but I was wrong! Wa's is hands down my favourite sushi place ever, even in comparison to my spots in Vancouver. The food is always fresh, the service is excellent, and the California Rolls are by far the best I have ever eaten. If you want to try a new sushi restaurant, Wa's is the spot. Enjoy!
I became a sushi lover years ago, and have been so many places in Calgary. As soon as I found Wa's, I stopped looking. It is by far the best sushi I've had in Calgary. Now I live in Saskatoon (a sushi-barren city) and I look forward to trips back to Calgary partially because I know I will get Wa's. Two good signs, as far as I'm concerned:
1) Always full of Japanese people... hey, they know they cuisine better than anyone!
2) The sign only says "Wa's" and something in Japanese, with no indication it's a Japanese restaurant... yet it's full every time I go. That's some strong word of mouth.
Being my wife grew up in Japan and will frequently have cravings for Sushi Wa's is the spot to go. We've tried probably every Japanese restaruant in town and the overall Sushi / value of Wa's is the best. However, when it comes to a 'Bento Box' or 'Miso Ramen' we do have another favorite.
I went there last Friday after reading all the great reviews. The sushi was good but nothing out of the ordinary, considering their prices are in the high end. I was most disappointed with their spicy tuna salad. At $7.00, I wasn't expecting much, maybe a few slices of tuna and some garnishes. Well, it turned out that it was really a tuna salad, that is canned tuna mixed with the tiniest bit of spicy sauce on 2 leaves of romaine lettuce. I thought the waitress could've said something like "just to let you know, it's canned tuna..." I looked at the menu again to see if they had a real tuna salad and there was a fresh tuna with avocado salad. I ordered that and was served a bowl with maybe 2 pieces of sashimi worth of white tuna and some cubes of avocado. Not the freshest tuna I had, but at least it wasn't canned.
I Love Wa's. The Atmosphere is cozy and inviting, Great place for a date. the service is fantastic! the sushi is so fresh and well cut that I a non-sushi eater throughly enjoy it, This was actually the first place I ever had sushi, I thought I loved it then went to other places and was turned off. But going back to Wa's I enjoy it every time.
Worth every moment and dollar you spend here.
