Presentation is everything at Hana Sushi, where preparation and attention to detail characterize all of their food. The fish is cut generously into thick slices, with none of the spare servings usually associated with sushi houses. The specialty of the house is the lacquered Bento Box, which contains noodles, a salad, a meat dish, sushi and a rice dish. The Bento Box is only CAD 8.50 and provides a full meal for even the largest eater. The food is ready almost immediately, and the servers are always prompt and courteous.
I went for a 'quick lunch' one day and ended up waiting forever - so long that I had to leave (and get my food to takeaway) and go back to my office. When I tried to pay, I waited an extra 20 minutes as their card machine was broken.
But I must say, it was the best sushi I have ever had. I would definitely go back - but bring cash and give yourself a little extra time. I would also recommend that you sit inside - that way they can't 'forget' about you. You also get to watch the sushi magic happen before your very eyes!
We've only eaten at Hana Sushi once but we take out every weekend. The service is lacking but the food is excellent. The one time we ate there it took forever to find the server to pay our bill. But we always go there because the food is so good.
This ain't your father's sushi. Think of it as "Iron Chef does sushi". Creative, non-traditional, and super-sized. My favorite sushi in Calgary (maybe my favorite anywhere). Be prepared to wait on weekends.
