Known for its sumptuous meals and elegant atmosphere, Villa Firenze is just five minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown. The tranquil dining environment offers candlelight and music, and particular attention is paid to the lighting, which is kept subdued and subtle. The restaurant's selections include mouthwatering Italian dishes such as pasta and chicken, seafood, veal and lamb. You can choose from an extensive wine list, and the prices are extremely reasonable for a restaurant of this caliber.
I have to say that I enjoyed my experience immensely, the food was outstanding as was the service, I see other people say that 39.95 for the rack of Lamb was to much but honestly do you get a full rack of Lamb anywhere else? Frankly I thought the portions were very good value, they aren't shy about making sure that you go home satisfied, and I certainly didn't mind enjoying my leftovers the following day! The fact that practically everything in the restaurant is made in house is wonderful, and some of the recipes date back to the Stromboli days! I will visit this restaurant regularly its superb!
this place used to be one of our favourites...unfortunately, when the prices went up, we noticed that the quality went down. (Note...the place was dead). $39.95 for a rack of lamb??? Give me a break! To add insult, the complimentary after dinner liquer tasted watered down.
Four of us,long time residents of Calgary and frequent patrons of Villa Firenze, went there recently for a birthday celebration. For openers, they "lost"our reservation, but managed to seat us. We waited more than half an hour for a harried young waitress to take our order, then cooled our heels for close to 45 minutes before the mediocre food arrived. The place was packed and noisy and our impression was one of an over-stressed staff who looked like they were trying to do too much. Must have been the same way in the kitchen.
There are many very good restaurants in this city, fortunately. This was such a disappointing experience that some other restaurant will get our business in the future. Still, we're puzzled: how could this formerly very good restaurant come to this. It may be that this was just an off night...we'll never find out.
For all you people who said it took to long to get your food. This is most likely because you were expecting a quick meal. Villa Firenze never claimed to be quick. Its a place to go with friends and exepect it to take a while. Our total meal took about 3 and a little bit hours, but it flew by because i was with friends. Plust the pasta and the tiramisu is amazing.
after arriving back from Italy my husband and I decided to try villa firenze. We were so glad we did. The food, especiallly the portobello mushroom appetizer, was fantastic. I wasn't thrilled with the service but I have had worse. Overall they seemed a little aloof to their customers needs. I took this as an exception rather than a rule. Because their food was so good I am willing to give them another chance. If you decide to try them out I would make reservations before I go. I had the disappointment on one occasion of calling just before I went and they were not able to accomodate me.
I have to say that I liked the food. The portions are good. The preparation is fine.
The bad part is that the service is second rate, at best [definitely not at the level you would expect at a good, high quality restaurant]. My wife had a couple of questions about the menu, and the waiter acted like this was a huge waste of his time. Like we should have KNOWN about all the specials and soup by reading minds. From then on, the service went from bad to worse. He 'forgot' to bring bread and forgot to refill water.
He did remember to give us the check.
I 'forgot' to tip the waiter. I did tell the manager. I was ready to give the chef a tip through the manager (the food was fine), but the manager did not think that the poor service of his waiter was worth noting. He blew us off. No apology, nothing. I kept the tip.
This is a disappointing performance for a restaurant that most people regard as good.
I will not go back. Ever. I get treated better by zit-faced teens at fast food joints.
I have been to Villa Firenze 2 times - Once for lunch and again last night for a private function. If you did not know, they have a large room in the back for private parties. It is very tastefully decorated with dark hardwood floors, beautiful painted scrolls on the ceilings and elegant light fixtures throughout the room. It truly feels like you are in a villa somewhere in Italy.
The food last night was excellent! The mushroom appitizer is always a favorite and the seafood was perfectly seasoned and excellent. The beef tenderloin was cooked perfectly to "medium" as our party host requested. My favorite dish of the evening had to be the ricotta and spinach stuffed pasta. The tomato sauce was not to acidy or salty with just the right amount of basil for flavour. The pasta is homemade and very good.
The service was just right. The timing of the dishes was perfectly spaced out with just enough time in between courses to socialize and digest!
I will definatly be back for dinner at the restaurant and I will possibly book the party room for my daughter's first communion next year.
Thanks for a wonderful evening.
Food was alright, but service was quite poor.
Our party of nine qualified as a large group, for which the restaurant automatically rewards themselves with a 17% tip. Meanwhile:
* Nobody at the coat check to take our coats, and no greeter at the door to show us to our table.
* A long, long time to deliver the entres (with the last one being delivered ten minutes after the first.)
* When the first entres arrived we asked for some bread. Twenty minutes later they had the gall to bring the bread to the table *after* we had all finished eating and our plates had been cleared!
Obviously the staff knew their tip was automatic and it showed.
(BTW: Luckily we noticed the 17% gratuity in the small print on the menu. The wait staff never told us about ti and we almost double tipped when the bill came.)
Totally enjoyed my meal. A great sound system with terrific music, but not too loud. Elegant decor. The pasta dishes are suberb, as is the portabello mushroom appetizer. I will definitely be returning!
This place is awesome! They have the best pasta I have ever had in Calgary. Their portobello mushroom appetizer is to die for. Villa Firenze apparently has been a long-time secret with local Calgarians, but I think the secret is getting out. I recommend you make reservations before you go.
