Thi Thi Vietnamese Submarine
This tiny restaurant across the street from the Government Building makes delicious Vietnamese food and submarine sandwiches. It is a pleasant change from the run-of-the-mill, and you can choose from a variety of dishes. The submarine sandwiches are their biggest sellers, and you can choose from sate beef, chicken, combo or clubhouse. If you like food with a little bite to it, ask them to add a healthy squirt of chili sauce. All this is available for CAD 3.50.
Every bite is fantastic and always, always great product and service. They are NOT affiliated with the place on 8th - the owner of the one across from the Harry Hays building told me so.
i will always patronize this particular shop.
yum yum. wash down a hot beef sate with chocolate milk. (north american blasphemer, i know)
Calgary, otherwise being a boring town, has a couple of things going for it. One of them being a variety of food brought to town by a variety of etnicities. I have my favorite Greek, Shwarma, Sushi, Hungarian, Pannekoeken etc. and in the Vietnamese corner: The subs of Thi Thi's. I have tried some others. No Sir! Similar ingredients, but not the same experience. Thi Thi's makes the best one (Timmy the Tiger).
I started going to this sub shop in the early 90's after college when I was broke as a joke, the subs were cheep ($2.25) and you could pick up an iced coffee from the grocery next door. It made a great lunch! Great subs especially the assorted! If you want to hear an amazing story inquire about the owners trip to Canada! Wow!
There are other places close to where I work and live now, but I will make a pilgrimage this weekend.
2 assorted please!
The original Thi Thi had, and still has a commitment to making sure you have a great sandwich experience. The 8th ave shop, however skimps on the chicken, and sometimes you get chicken that has dried out on the edges. Also, they seem to forget to cut the end of the bun sometimes, so your first bite is all bun. If they put a tiny bit more chicken in, and made sure it was not dried hard on the edges, this review would go from good to excellent.
I live in Vancouver and my brother lives in Calgary. He introduced me on a visit a few years ago, and now these subs are part of the reason I visit so much. There is nothing like this anywhere. These subs are completely a one of a kind. Wish they existied in Vancouver. I would eat there all the time.
Please open in Vancouver, we more ethinic difersity than anywhere else in canada, but we do not have a Thi Thi sub shop!
I find the 8th Ave. SW location hit and miss. The meats are swimming in grease so, as a result, depending on the day you can get a 1000+ calorie sandwich. Otherwise I love the taste. Need to skim the fat, guys.
These subs are amazing. A Sate chicken sub comes with pieces of spicy chicken breast, marinated carrots, thin sliced onion, a few sprigs of cilantro, and a couple of chili peppers for added heat. This is combined with a special Vietnamese mayo, cheese, and a little soy, on a fresh European sub (12 inch) type bun. What you end up with is an explosion of flavors with each bite. There is actually real chicken (or beef if you prefer), from the first bite to the very last. With today's shrinking dollar, this is an incredible value for only $5.50! I was hooked on these after my second sub. Now I'm a regular at Thi Thi. Making the trip a couple times a month. I've tried other Viet sub shops, but have yet to find an equal. There is a second Thi Thi (franchise) location (that has eat-in facilities), on 8th Avenue and about 6th St. SW., but That's a different review.
