Moti Mahal Restaurant
Located in the southwest part of the city, Moti Mahal is open 7 days a week and offers delicious, spicy Indian cuisine at very reasonable prices. If you would like something a little less hot, you can ask for 'made to order' dishes where less seasoning is used. Take advantage of their lunch buffet from Monday to Friday. They also have a large selection of beer and wine. Moti Mahal is large and spacious and the “L” shaped dining room makes the restaurant seem even larger.
I'm so lucky that my friend told me about this place otherwise I would have never known. Tucked away on off of 17th ave and 14th street, this little gem of a restaurant should be visited by everyone in the city. They have the best Indian food I've ever had and I'm from Vancouver which is quite known for its Indian food. This is REAL Indian food, not contemporary fusion. Everything is meant for sharing, and they have amazing Naan. Anyways, go there.
Went there for the lunch buffet the other day. It's the best Indian lunch buffet in the city. With nice fresh naan, and nice variety of dishes, and it had some spice to it, which I haven't found at others. Fast friendly service too. For $13.95 it cant be beat.
Unless there is another Moti Mahal in Calgary other than the one in Midnapore that all these people are raving about, I can't recommend this disappointing restaurant. We were told that it was very good, but honestly we have had much better Indian food in this city. We were wondering where they get off charging such high prices for such small servings. ($15.00 for eight morsel-size pieces of butter chicken, come on!) The "most tender" lamb was like chewing on a piece of stale gum. There were only three tables occupied, and I didn't see a single Indian person - including the wait staff - in the place. Hugely disappointing - and we will never go back!
Lets get straight to the food. Just awesome. From the papri-chat (appetiser) to the main course (Malai Kofta, Dhal, Okra) the food was ...awesome! Yes, they probably need at least a couple more waiting staff to ensure the std of service keeps up with the food. B
First of all, make a reservation if you plan to go on the weekend. We went in on a friday night at 7ish, expecting to get a table, as there were only two of us, only to be told that they were fully booked, and they wouldnt have space until, 8:00. We decided to take a walk and come back. Upon re-arrival we had to wait 5 or so minutes, until our table was ready, then we sat.
The service was fantastic, considering how busy it was, there wasnt an open table in the place. Drinks arrived reasonably fast, with a decent selection of wines, martinis, and beers. The appetizers arrived fast and were to die for, I recommend the tandoori goat cheese. The main course took about 30 minutes, but when it arrived, every part about it was amazing. Try the special plate, a mixture of lamb, chicken, prawns, and the best part were the sauteed onions, all served on a cool hot plate. mmmm.
To sum it up, an excellent exprience all around, with the bill being in the $80-90 range with a nice bottle of wine.
May be we were un lucky that night . but it seemed they are seriously in lack of staff .
We got a slow service (almost no drink unless we asked three times to take our drink order and finally drink came almost when we were finishing),
Also be careful , if you get a table for more than 8 people , automatically you will be charged 15% extra , may be that is why no body paid any attention to our table of 10 ,no matter what we ate or how the meal was , we were charged 15% extra (Grat) in our bill .
To be fair , I liked the decoration and furnitures more than service and food
My last experience in Apr 2007 from this restaurant was so good that we recommended it to other friends , but I don't know what has changed in between (Apr 2007 to 20 Sep 07) that last night I would say I got one the worst experiences from having dinner in restaurants in Calgary during 9 years staying in Calgary ,
Service was poor (only 3 poor young unexperienced fellows for almost 50-60 customers ) , foos came late and partly cold ,terrible smoke which caused half of us coughing from one of our hor plate fish meals orders which caused even people sitting in our besides table to cough , ,,,,
it was a bad night .
This is by far the best place in Calgary for East Indian food. My husband has a fondness for Curry as do most Brits! We are regulars here and the food is great and the staff strive to do there best in serving customers. The food is always amazing and the spiciness can differ from cook to cook but it’s always delicious.
My only negative comment would be the wait time to order drinks and a starter or to collect the bill. But the cute water boy makes up for it and ensures you always have a cup full of water and did I mention he was cute.
I would suggest never going without a reservation and ensuring you have time. We only go here when we want fine Indian Cuisine because it is the best in all Calgary and trust me we shopped around. Enjoy.
