Yamato Japanese Restaurant

Description

The Yamato is a family-run Japanese restaurant tucked away in the city's northwest. In fact you can almost miss it if you're not careful, as it is hidden in a strip mall directly across from Sir Winston Churchill School, and offers excellent Japanese cuisine at very reasonable prices. They have a comprehensive menu with more than a dozen appetizers to choose from. The more adventurous diner can order the exotic sashimi seafood or seaweed stuffed with rice. The sushi ranges in price from $1.20 to $2.80 per item.

Most awful service; not well after eating the food
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/24/11
Yesterday's service was awful and I'm still feeling the after taste of the food this morning. So much MSG. We ordered sushi and tempura. The waitress didn't really want to put us at a table and stuck us close to the door even though there were tables free in other parts of the restaurant. I emphasized that I didn't have a dealfind voucher. While I was eating my last bite of food, she came and clear the table without asking if we were finished eating. Basically, I still had chopsticks in my hand. Next thing you know, the bill was dumped on our table. It wasn't like the food was cheap...for the amount we paid (~$100) for three people, we could have gotten a nice steak and far more superior service elsewhere with much nicer surroundings. Don't go unless you want a poor dining experience.

Does NOT honor Dealfind coupon
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/24/11
Purchased a coupon from Dealfind on March 22nd; booked a table for March 25th (to use Dealfind coupon); rejected my booking because only 5 coupons (5 different customers) can be used in one day and 5 such customers have already booked the tables. One IMPORTANT thing: no such restriction is mentioned on the Dealfind coupon!

Big Sashimi
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/17/09
This place isn't amazing for customer service, but they give big pieces of sashimi for a pretty reasonable price. And they have 15% off on monday & tuesdays! It's always fresh when we've been there or ordered out, and in general I am very happy with the food quality. It is our #1 sushi place in the NW for sure!

Favorite spot
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/11/09
I know sushi and this place serves up some of the best in Calgary its fresh large in size and is consistently good. The NW location is the only one I have gone to so I will have to check out the their other one but when I found this restraunt five years ago it went to the top of my list. No frills is correct but for people who go for sushi because they actually enjoy it and not to be adventurouse or trendy this is the place for you.

Absolute garbage
By Hank, 3/24/09
I go in and am greeted poorly. Served tepid Miso soup and a salad with a watery, rather disgusting sesame sauce. The katsu-don which was served was brutal. The pork tasted old and it was not cooked long enough, on top of that it tasted like it was cooked in old oil. The egg, which should be cooked a little from the heat of the dish was just runny and the sauce tasted like salt, salt, and more dirty salt. I only ate one bite of the pork. Told the servers and cook what I thought of it, did not refuse to pay, so they still thought they should charge me. Great way to treat customers. I jsut wanted to get out of there and wash my mouth out and hope not to get sick. Do not ever eat there.

Worst Customer Service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/19/08
December 2008 - The food at yamato is good but the customer service from one of the waitress were terrible. I went to yamato just today and they literally yelled at my friend and I to take off our shoes for the room. My friend has minor allergies to egg so we asked them to separate the egg but the waitress response was, "just don't have the egg then." any types of allergies request they refused and the waitress made it sound like it was none of her responsibility. She would simply say, "that has to do with the kitchen, I don't know." She also pressured as to leave as soon as we finished the food by bringing in the recipet and constantly reminding us so that they could bring in more customer into the restaurant. Beforehand, we already paid but they kept insisting that we didn't pay our bill and wouldn't let us go. She forced us to pay although we paid cash beforehand already and told us that we were trying to get away on purpose. She had terrible attitude and I refused to give her any tips.

dining and dashing.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/19/08
today, a few of my friends and i went to the restaurant. there were eight of us and obviously, we were all going to eat. the woman who was seating us was extremely rude and made no move to be friendly or considerate in the least. the service was bad and the food wasn't all that great, but it wasn't horrible. all in all, i knew i wouldn't be coming back here if i had another choice. but then, something happened that made me hate the place. six of my eight friends had finished paying so we all stood outside waiting for the other two. then one of them came out and asked if we had paid. we all said yes. but when we went back inside, the woman who had seated us kept insisting we hadn't paid. she was accusing us of eating and leaving. we had all paid tho. we had seen each other pay. in the end tho, we just paid the extra and left. never again.

Very poor customer service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/20/08
This is the second time in three months where we have received poor customer service. We have been going here for 10 years and were always pleased with the food & ambience. This time the food was fine but once customers started to line up, the staff was unable to manage cleaning tables and seating new customers. They made a pregnant lady wait standing up. A family of 4 watched while another couple jumped in line ahead of them. We ordered 2 kids' meals (for kids obviously) and the staff brought the kids meals long after we adults had starting eating. I think this was our last time here.

Quantity surpasses $$$
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/21/07
What do you want when you go to a sushi restraunt? Excellent service, lively ambiance, and amazing food which is great for most but at Yamato you get all the above & huge portions for an expectional value.

Why the rating extremes??
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/11/07
The ratings go from FANTASTIC 5 stars to AWEFUL 1 star with nothing in between. Why? Writers on a couple of the reviews seems to make the same gramatical mistakes.
