Grizzly House

Description

This restaurant is an institution in Banff. The interior looks as if it was carved from the inside of a tree, with highly varnished wooden walls hanging with a whole herd of buffalo heads. The bizarre menu specializes in expensive fondue dinners featuring morsels of beef, ostrich, buffalo, rattlesnake, alligator, venison and assorted other meats. The wine list features over 100 selections including a special list of Canadian wines. Dinner at the Grizzly House is an event to remember.

Go there all the time
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/6/10
I find this is THE best place to go to in banff if you like something out of the ordinary. Its not your pre packaged food like chain restaurants. Its always an amazing experience. The food, the service, the cleanliness, the atmosphere...all very very good. Thumbs up to everyone there...and we'll see you saturday

So disappointed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/25/10
My husband and I stopped at the Grizzly House for a late lunch during a recent day trip to Banff. We have been there previously and enjoyed the experience and the food. Imagine our surprise when the host and the waiter turned out to be unaccountably rude and condescending. We were given a small, dark table although it was after 2 p.m. and only four other tables were occupied. When we asked to move to a brighter and more pleasant location, we were told, "Ask your waiter, you never know when more tables of four will come for lunch". The waiter proved to be equally unpleasant and, it seemed to us, proceeded to serve us grudgingly. We were sorely tempted to leave and it's unlikely that we will be patronizing this restaurant again! Do they not realize that they are in the business of providing service to people who come to enjoy themselves, spend their money and should rightly expect value for that expense? On speaking of our experience to other people, we learned that this was not an isloated incident and others had experienced rude behaviour from staff. Not the way to run a restaurant people!! Especially in an economy when business are closing down. And for wait staff who think it's ok to treat customers as an inconvenience, here's my advice -- get a different job.

Vastly over-rated
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/13/09
This place is vastly over-rated and far too expensive. The cheese fondue was very good and authentically Swiss, but so too was the price! Our party of five was disappointed by the main courses. Fast food burgers would have been tastier and less expensive. The worst aspect was the service. Our waiter was rude, untimely and undeserving of any gratuity, which to our horror was automatically included in the bill! Don’t waste your time or money here.

Loved it ate there daily.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/10/08
Our favorite restaurant in Banff! Great location! We really enjoyed the experience of using the hot stones. Everything was fresh and tasted great. Much Much better than The Melting Pot or La Fondue. The staff was friendly and even remembered our preferences. We plan to visit Banff and Grizzly House again real soon.

tourist trap
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/13/08
lots of game food, but not very good. you cook it on a slab of stone... over priced and not worth the novelty because at the end you ask, that was it? it's a tourist trap. Our entire party was unimpressed...The Keg, Banffshire Club, Typhoon, and Saltlik-all provided superior dining experiences

Expensive
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/21/08
This place was excellent in taste, and in service. The place looks like a tree on the inside and out. But when we had like 8 chunks of beef fondue, and 2 chunks of alligator the bill was expensve. We had three people dining and the bill was over 100 and we didn't even have wine. So if you want a small portion with expensive taste go here.

Bad Service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/13/07
I have dined at the Grozzly House many times. However, this past weekend we were in Banff and stopped in to make a reservation for that same evening, as we have done many times in the past. We asked the hostess if we would be able to make a reservation for that evening, and she snapped 'not til 10:00. It's the long weekend guys' First of all, it isn't a long weekend for some people. Second of all, I absolutely do not appreciate being talked down to. She has no idea how much money I, my friends and family and my husband's company spend there every year. As a Calgarian, I feel this horrible service reflects badly on us as well. If I were from soemwhere farther away and this was my one and only time there, I wouldn't know of the service I normally receive there and would leave with a terrible impression.

Great for all age groups
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/7/07
The food was delicious. We couldn't get over how tender the beef was. The sauces were yummy. We were a table of 8 women ages 18 to 72. We all enjoyed it a lot. You can use the table phones to call other tables, so we had a lot of fun with that. Even tho it was expensive, we thought it was worth it for the food and the entertainment value. After all it is Banff, everything is expensive. We would do it again.
