The Balkan is one of the few representatives of a culinary genre that is rare in the Canadian west—garlic and olive oil spiced Greek dining. While far from the rustling orchards and soft breezes of the Mediterranean, this Hellenic spot still manages to serve up a mean platter of Kalamari and Keftethes. Colourful Mediterranean paintings and marble busts are interspersed with clambering, tangled vines. The 20 or so tables scattered throughout the room fill up quickly around suppertime, so it's a good idea to reserve.
This was not only the worst Greek food I have ever had, it was one of the worst meals I have ever had. Over priced big time. I had the vegetarian combo because I wanted spanikopeta and teropitas. What I got looked like a Hot Pocket only with less filling. The veggies that came with it were mush. The cabbage rolls were slimey. I have eaten at many greek places but none have ever been this bad. I think the other reviewers were caught up in the belly dancing and must have had adequate quanities of alcohol.
We go every year with a group of 15 guys on our annual ski trip. Great food and service. Family owned and they use their own recipes. Calamari is best I've ever had. Lamb roast falls off the bone!!! Treat yourself on Greek night...breaking plates, belly dancers and lots of ouzo!
An overall great experience. Just like to point out to one of the other reviewers that cabbage rolls do not exist in Greek cuisine, but what he is referring to are dolmathes which are grape leaves stuffed with rice...they're soggy by design.
I came from Vancouver and had never eaten at the Balkan. It was reccommended by the front dest at the Fairmont Banff Springs. It was awesome. We went on the Greek night and had a great time! The owner Joanna made sure we were well taken care of. Good bellydancing, fun Zorba dancing. Make sure you get up and dance, they let you smash plates. Great Greek cuisine. Try the Lamb.
I read another review that said that he had a bad meal. Well I've never had a bad meal at the Balkan and I've been going to this restaurant for over 5 years now. The veggie combo is great. Go here it rules!!!
I've been to Greek Restaurants all over Canada and this has been one of my top 5 for sure. We went on a Greek Night (Tuesdays I think)that was rambunctious and definately Greek. Bellydancing and Greek Dancing made it very memorable.
The service was great if only a little hectic when the dinner show was going on. Our server Silas was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. He knew the menu very well and recommended some great dishes.
I had the Lagos Stifado (Rabbit Stew) that was out of this world. The strong mediterranean flavours of the red wine tomato sauce highly complemented the tender rabbit. My girlfriend had the vegetarian combo (Spanakopita, tyropita and dolmathes) that were as good as any we've had. I reccomend the saganaki as a starter (flaming cheese)
We will definately go back.
My wife and I visisted the Balkan this past spring and had a great time. We went on a "Greek night" which was recommended to us by a 'local'. It was definately worth it. Solid Greek cuisine as ridiculous entertainment. Looking for something to spice up your trip to Banff... this is it. The boys who took over this restaurant from their parents are ridiculously entertaining. Make sure you go and tell them you're in Banff to experience real culture. Food=Greek, Service=way better than most, entertainment=redonkulous. A welcome treat for any tourist anywhere.
