British Museum

Description

The British Museum is one of London's top tourist attractions as well as a major scholarly resource. Its collection was bequeathed to the nation in 1753 and the Museum's distinctive Greek revivalist structure was built during the 19th Century. The collection expanded massively during the heyday of the British Empire, leading to the Museum's notoriety for plundering sources all over the globe and leaving it with over 6.5 million objects to look after. The displays cover about 14 acres and it is simply too tiring to tackle them all in one visit. The best way is to pick a collection or exhibition that interests you, explore that, and make return visits. And if you haven't got time for a proper visit, drop in for a coffee at the lovely Court Restaurant . Admission is free but charges may be made for temporary exhibitions.

Never visit a museum alone!
By London, 3/28/12
The British Museum is one of London's best museums to explore. Never explore it alone, come along with the London Cultureseekers Group. We are a very friendly group exploring London's fantastic history and culture through it's museums, galleries, historical buildings, going on guided walks and visiting the theatre.

Good price/quality ratio

... as it is free. Here you'll find glimpses of humankind's treasures from all over the world, from Indian totems and Easter Islands' statues to Egyptian, Greek and Babylonian antiquities. All in a nice and peaceful atmosphere.

Obviously a 'must visit'
By Greg Browning, 4/25/09
This was probably my favorite museum-type destination in the whole of our trip last year. I spent about three hours here. Wife and kids were not quite as enthusiastic as I was, but still thought it was amazing. A little pricey for Americans, but what in the UK isn't?

Don't Miss the British Museum!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/18/07
I spent half a day in the British Museum and I could have easily spent several days there. It is AMAZING the things that you will find there: Mummies galore, including Cleopatra's mummy. The Rosetta stone! A 5,000 year old Oblisk. Artifacts from ancient Greece and Rome. The list of treasures goes on and on. This is an amazing place not to be missed. And the price is right: Free!

You can't miss this
By politikgirl, 11/17/06
The British Museum is a fantastic museum and a beautiful building on its own. If you love museums, you'll love the BM. If you're not a big museum fan, spend a little less time there, but don't miss it. It's free, so even if you have half an hour to spare, make sure you drop by and see what the BM has to offer.

The British Museum
By Flaming Arrow, 9/7/06
A must see for All. They robbed the world for this place, & the art made me weep. I am a big museum buff, but The British Museum is by far the best museum I have ever been.

a history buff's must
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/28/06
I am a history major and this is by far the best musuem I have ever been to. Large collections from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt are a must see for even a non-history student. Check out the pub across the street from the sun garden for a good meal and pint.

British Museum--No Place Like it
By gbgirl79, 1/8/06
This museum is grand yet inviting. I would highly suggest taking the Highlight Tour (£8 per adult) for an in-depth tour of the museum. Otherwise, it can be very confusing. Overall, the best museum I have been to.

Amazing!
By MeganO, 7/29/05
I love this Museum! It's free to get in and there are so many attractions! You could easily spend a whole day here, or even more! There is a restaurant/ cafeteria or bring a lunch and sit outside on the beautiful lawn! A definite must see!
