Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens

Description

An oasis of tranquility in central London, Hyde Park, together with Kensington Gardens to the west, is the largest of the three royal parks. On the north-east side is Speaker's Corner , a traditional haven of free speech. The Serpentine boating lake, complete with a designated swimming area, and the Serpentine Gallery is a famous tourist spot. The Albert Memorial and the statue of the mischievous character Peter Pan is housed at the Kensington Gardens also attract a crowd. Separated by the stately Serpentine Bridge, many visitors to the park choose to sunbathe near Diana Fountain or simply dip their feet into the water. A great place to spend the afternoon.

I like to stroll the gardens after dark.

The darken paths, the solitude, and the peaceful breezes blowing through the leafless branches.

Enjoy The View
By ,
I went to Hyde Park a few hours after landing in London. I walked around and then sat on one of the park benches to enjoy the view. Well, before I knew it, I had fallen asleep. When I woke up I still had all of my belongings and I was well rested. On another visit to the park, I went to speaker's corner. It wasn't what I expected but it was interesting. Do yourself a favor, go to the park but try to stay awake!

Joy of Diana's Kensington Gardens
By ,
Kensington Gardens offers so much joy. It is the home to the late Princess Di's Kensington Palace which you can visit. Wonderful restaurant rests nearby for lunch, high-tea and such. Fantastic playground past the Palace. The paths are perfect for joining the strollers, runners, rollerbladers and bikers (paths clearly designated so you don't get mowed over). Green grass abounding with the lovely London chaisses for rent on the grassy patches or near the beautiful pond. Stroll through the lovely specimen trees abloom in spring. Kensington leads into Hyde Park which continues as one of the most fantastical parks in the world. Kensington Gardens is right next to High St. with so many fun shops, restaurants, book store, Odeon Cinema, Marks & SPencer, HMS... and near Church St. with the wide range of boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and pubs. Royal Albert Hall is within walking distance, and the Science and the Natural History Museums are nearby.

Beautiful
By ,
As with most of the larger parks in London, this one was wonderful. For the photographer, it is great. I spent several hours here just taking pictures and watching the locals. A person can get a feel for the people of London in the parks. Many people get out to mingle and relax. It was a nice experience to see the local people, the native birds and get some great pictures of flowers and trees.

Excellent place to relax...beautiful!
By ,
I really loved going to Hyde Park and taking in the absolute beauty of the nature side of London. Thought it would be a small place, but it is comparable to central park in NY. People all around playing soccer, Kensington palace, and the museums. Also check out the statues and gardens along the path to Kensington.

Beautiful!
By ,
Hyde Park is probably the BEST thing you can do for free in London. The first time I went to London I did not walk through this park at all, and after doing so on my 2nd trip, I will ALWAYS pick a day to have a picnic in Hyde Park. It is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! It's so peaceful to just find a nice, grassy area to sit and chat, have a picnic, or just people watch. This is also a must-do while in London!

Princess Di's fountain the best
By ,
Princess Diana's fountain was the best. I had expected a more traditional looking fountain but was very pleased to see such a cleverly designed memorial. Everyone was able to experience it more than just look at it. There were hundred's of people there on a very warm June Saturday afternoon.

Great place for a walk and some quiet time
By ,
Love the Serpentine. It's great to walk out here especially when open space is at such a premium in such a big city. Be prepared for at least a hour's walk around Hyde Park if you are up to it.

Relax in the Middle of London
By ,
Definitly one of my favorite areas in London. Although you may want to fill your time in London hitting all the major tourist sites (i.e. big ben, westminster, london eye, national gallery, tate modern etc) you should definitly schedule a break from the tourist thronged "guidebook" London and spend an afternoon in Hyde Park. Take a stroll around the serpintine, maybe rent a paddle boat and take a little ride. I always enjoy sitting in one of the comfortable deck chairs in Kennsington Gardens and people watching. Although it does cost 1.50 for 2 hours, it's worth the splurge. After relaxing in the deck chairs you can easily make your way to Kennsington Palace, the former residence of Princess Diana. So take a break and reward yourself with a relaxing stroll through the park! People watch, make new friends, drink some tea, and most of all, have fun!
