Formerly known as Yaohan Plaza, this mall (completely unknown to most Londoners) focuses on Asian goods from Japan, China, Vietnam and Indonesia. For hard-to-find food ingredients this is foodie heaven, and you'll find excellent noodles, vegetables and fish as well. If you dont want to cook it yourself, the food court is a great place for a cheap and easy meal. Try Atami for bentos (Japanese lunchboxes) for a fiver, Noto Ramen for noodles, and Noto Sushi for sushi. The mall has everything from shops selling crockery and tableware to Hello Kitty merchandise, Asian magazines, hairdressers, video stores and a games arcade. It's a great place to explore an Asian getaway within London itself.
Although slightly out of the way this is a graet place to come. The large supermarket hasc a wide range of thai.korean.chinese andf japenese foodstuffs and is definetely cheaper than chinatown. The food courtalso has a wide range of cheap eating options from noodles to sushi.
Oriental City is the best place in London for authentic Japanese/Chinese/Thai/Malaysian/Vietnamese food. It's great value and all under one roof. There is a great supermarket selling hard-to-find ingredients imported over from Asia, and also other stores selling all kinds of genuine merchandise. There is even an amusement games center for the kids. Having lived in London for a few years, Oriental City is still the best place to go for food. The place is swarming with oriental families so you really know it's good food when they eat there all the time.
I am lucky enough to be one of the few that live outside London that knows of this place. I used to go when it was mostly Japanese. It seems to be mostly Chinese now. But never-the-less it is a great place to visit. Not only is there a great Food Court in which you can sample the delights of Asian food from Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, etc. You can also shop in the supermarket and buy Japanese bakery goods from the bakery. You can buy all manner of Japanese crockery and books. You can buy music CDs from places such as China and Japan and also DVDs and VCDs. It seems every time I visit Oriental City there is a show being performed in the middle, on a stage, from dancers, musicians and singers from various Asian countries. They have special weekends for each country. I recommended it highly and the parking is free, which is a rare treat for those that have to travel into London. Also just outside Oriental City is a nice little second hand Japanese book shop. If you are interested you should pay a visit there as well.
Anyway, whenever you are in that part of London you must pay a visit to Oriental City, especially if you are feeling hungry and you want have a change from MacDonalds. Also worthy to note is, I have a very young daughter and she just loves going there as well. If there is a show going on you can spend many an enjoyable hour there.
Jam together about 12 great takeaways- make some Chinese, Thai, Singaporean, Korean, Japanese. Better also make some of them Vietnamese, and add some specialist Chinese takeaways. Put them around a food court and let anyone order anyhthing from any of them. Cook the food in fast (lets say 2 minutes) time, and you have the food court. A lot of people of oriental origin eat there too, which, rather simplistically, I reckon is a good indicator.
Then of course, you have the chinese supermarkets, which is as good as my other favourite, in Liverpool. But that's another story.
Expect to pay 'reasonable' London take-away prices for the food, and other than a great supermarket and an interesting china shop, expect not much more, and you will not be disappointed.
