Bag O'Nails (The)
This is the pub where Paul McCartney first laid eyes upon Linda. Just a few minutes' walk from Buckingham Palace , it offers a relaxed atmosphere and attractive decor. Very busy at lunchtimes and in the evenings, The Bag O'Nails serves good food (the ploughman's lunch is highly recommended) and offers friendly, polite staff in a quality surrounding. An added bonus is that table service is provided at quieter times throughout the day. Call the restaurant to check timings.
Nice enough pub, nothing exceptionally unique about it, but it is not THE Bag o' Nails pub where Macca met Linda. That one's in the West End near Carnaby Street and is now a fancy restaurant. Any good Beatles tour guide worth his salt will tell you that, not this Bag ' Nails here, despite it claim otherwise. Sorry. Don't be fooled like we were.
Many a happy hour was spent at the Bag O’Nails during our visits to London from Canada from 1973 to 1990. From the description I see on your web there have been many changes. First of all there was no web. Our first visit to the pub we were impressed with the food. Lunch was served upstairs by the Gov’ner, Joe. Steak-n-Kidney Pie was a favourite. Our first lunch I asked for tea, Joe gruffly quipped. “We don’t serve tea, just coffee.” We had coffee. There was an English sweet they served. I think it was Triffle. I wanted to try it. It was good but too sweet for me to finish. Next night we dropped in after an early Theatre. When Joe, no the ‘Pot Man’ was picking up mugs, I stopped him and complimented him on the noon meal. His answer was.
“My wife asked why you didn’t finish you dessert.” We loved Joe. He was our idea of a good old English Pub Master. This is just one of the many memories we can share at the ‘Bag’ over the years.
We take friends and first time visitors to the Bag O Nails after watching the changing of the guard as it is close by and is a typical small london pub. Friendly, good pub menu, reasonable drink selection, and good people watching.
