A library destroyed. Vandalism by a philistine council
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/8/06
This beautiful building was originally the Sterling Library. The library housed a large and varied collection of books including a splendid reference section. The lofted ceilings gave a pleasant area for the citizens of Glasgow to sit and read while enjoying the former splendour of the building and a peaceful spot in the midst of the busy city.
The library or rather what remains of it is now housed in the basement of the building beside the Internet and caf facilities. By far the best part of the building has been transformed to display the biggest load of rubbish that can possibly be imagined. It is probably worth the free entrance just to listen to the comments of those people amazed at what they are seeing. Mostly amazed in a baffled sort of way I am afraid. I have visited this Gallery on many occasions trying to find something that would justify the destruction of the original library to provide this exhibition space.
On my last visit I saw the following: -
An old fashioned hairdryer with a wooden handle.
A dysfunctional trampoline, made so by replacing the canvas with a sheet of plate glass
Something that looked like a gigantic half chewed Murray mint
A badly made puppet at a strange angle
A collection of drain pipes incorporating a milk churn
Some paving stones made into a tower
I have no idea who pays for this rubbish. I only hope it is not me by way of my council tax.
It is sad the people of Glasgow have to tolerate this insult to their intelligence by their local officials.
Do go, do look, do comment, do fill in a form saying what a load of rubbish it is and send it to your councillor direct. Do protest for the things we are losing in the name of progress.
Please go to the Kelvin art gallery to see a more expensive act of vandalism. I think it was 30,000,000 we wasted on that one.
