Royal Museum (The)
The Royal Museum is a huge and wondrous "bird-cage" building in the Victorian mold. 36 galleries host exhibitions covering a whole host of topics, from the natural world—palaeontology, geology, etc—to technology and science. Admire the oldest steam engine in the world and marvel at whale skeletons. Children in particular will be drawn to the weird and wonderful specimens in jars. Art from the Orient and north Mediterranean is also on display, including pieces from Korea and ancient Egypt. Next door is the recently opened Museum of Scotland , which chronicles the history of the Scots.
My grandparents live in Edinburgh, and when I was younger, this museum was the first I ever visited. It's amazing for kids- the animal exhibits were my favourites, and even when I go back now (entry is free!) I still think it's great. I went back last week to see the Tsar exhibition, which was brilliant (It's on until October) and I also got to have my usual nose around the actual museum. They still have real live fish in the fountains in the entrance hall as well. A bonus of any museum in my opinion. Brilliant.
