Edinburgh Castle

Description

Edinburgh Castle is Edinburgh's best known and most popular attraction and one of the most visited ancient monuments in Great Britain. It has breathtaking views of Edinburgh and tons to interest young and old alike - the Great Hall and Royal Apartments, the Crown Room, the Half Moon Battery, statues of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, and the Esplanade to name but a few. The Esplanade is also the venue of the world-renowned Military Tattoo, with its music, marching and historical re-enactments. The castle is home to Scotland's most famous cannon - a 15th-century monstrosity called Mons Meg, which is fired every day except Sunday. In a more somber corner of the castle is the Witches' Well where over 300 women were burned between 1492-1722.

Edinburgh Castle: Beauty Rich in History
By ,
Edinburgh Castle is Scotland's most famous and visited landmark. The castle's beauty and history begins with the location. The majestic castle stands at the heart of the city of Edinburgh atop Castle Rock, which is an extinct volcano lending the castle sheer cliffs to the south, west, and north, leaving the only readily accessible route to the castle to the gently sloping east side, which is the top of the famous Royal Mile. The history, medieval atmosphere, museums, shops, eatery, beauty and spectacular view of lovely Edinburgh lying below this massive jewel is well worth the small entrance fee to this, at least half day adventure. Don't miss Crown Square, The Stone of Destiny, St. Mary's Chapel, the gardens, and the One O'Clock Gun. Touch the ancient stone walls, climb the castle stairs, look up at the gargoyle's gazing down at you from their perches outside the historic walls, sit at the throne, and admire the staues of Braveheart and Robert the Bruce at the gate entrance. Don't miss this beauty rich in history!

overrated

It is hugely unimpressive. Looks like a row of miners cottages in Seaham. Level it. Very poor. Very poor. Terrible. Eyesore. Eyesore. Eyesore. Eyesore. Eyesore. Eyesore.

Worth visiting!
By ,
Edinburgh Castle is perhaps my favourite castle. Although it is smaller than the Tower of London, but the castle has it unique-ness. I will definitely visit the castle again. The view from the castle is picturesque, though the wind can sometimes get too chilling. Be sure to take the guided tour then explore the place on your own. Then visit the royal mile after the castle.

Breath taking...
By ,
Castle was absolutely beautiful. I was there end of September so it was not very crowded but still there were a lot of tourists. Make sure to be there before 1pm so you can catch the firing of one o'clock gun. I got myself an audio guide as well for 3 GBP. Views of the city and countryside from the castle is spectacular. While you're walking around the castle you can actually feel history. It is well worth visiting!

Heritage at the Castle
By ,
Edinburgh castle is gorgeous, some of the best views of the city can be seen and photographed from here. The museums inside the buildings are well labled, informative and moving. The greatest of them is the military sections with books listing all soilders fought and lost in all wars and conflicts. There are still soilders who are stationed here and return every evening. The cafes carry nice items though better dinning adventures lay beyond the castle streets. It is definately worth the entry fee to stop here.

An Edinburgh treat
By ,
This historic castle is fantastic. Great city views from the battlements. Visit to the military museum is well worth the time taken. Takes atleast half a day to see all of the castle and museums. It was the highlight of our trip. I would love to come back and see the Military Tatoo which is staged in the Fall

Wonderful!
By ,
Great castle and fabulous historical artifacts. Don't miss the little chapel. One of the best castles I've seen in Europe. It isn't overcrowded like many European sites. Well worth your time!

Absolutely Beautiful
By ,
I visited Edinburgh Castle this past summer and it was beautiful. This is by far the best place in the city to get a more than spectacular view. From the different chambers to the dungeons, well worth the visit.

Edinburgh
By ,
Absolutely loved everything about the city of Edinburgh. I would recommend buying a tour package, which will take you to all the attractions via bus. This way you do not have to worry about having to drive and find your way. The only thing I did not enjoy about the place was the very idea of having to drive there. Traffic, though orderly, does not forgive uncertainty or hesitation. The public transport system is superb. Be sure to take in some of the outlying areas as well, such as Queen's Ferry (magic in of itself). When visiting some of the local taverns and pubs, beware... one beer in Scotland is equivilant to about four beers in the U.S. Be sure to try the black pudding after your night on the town! You can get it at most fish n chip shops, most of which stay open until the wee hours, along with some of the best fresh breads and sweets. As in any big city anywhere in the world, keep to the well populated areas and mind your back and your pocketbook. Definately worth the money. Scotland a wonderful place, soaked in history and brimming with a colorful personna all its own. Almost forgot. Take a sweater and your rain gear!
