Cafe St Honore
Cafe St Honore offers diners all the cheery and exciting elements of eating French. Thanks to a decor which recreates the look of a Parisian brasserie and food which exudes French chic, this place has retained a loyal following. If your conscience will give you a day off, indulge in a yummy, but waist-expanding dessert. The food is suitably French: rich and sumptuous, and good enough to appear in many a good food guide. The wine list is short, but closer inspection reveals many gems. By day this is a besuited, city establishment. By evening it's a romantic, candle-lit kind of place. The former incarnation is a smart place to impress or be impressed over a business lunch. The latter, using its tucked-away location to good effect, affords a quiet place to be with a loved one. Contrary to the Parisian theme, this is a no-smoking restaurant.
This restaurant has understated quality. I had braised duck with mashed potato. Initially on tasting it I wasn't blown away, but this food slowly grows on you in a way that subtle, expertly home-cooked food sometimes does. The mashed potato was wonderful and the simple stock gravy so much nicer than over-concentrated reductions sometimes are. My wife's venison was also very well received.
Another plus point is that the basic french Merlot was very nice and reasonably priced. We finished with cheese which was served in perfect condition, just enough for two to share.
Cafe St Honore is a beautiful gem in the centre of Edinburgh. Well worth a visit. Be warned, the restaurant is only small but this adds to the bistro ambiance and you feel like you are on holiday.
The food is very good. Game terrine to start - beautiful followed by chicken - beautifully cooked. Great value both in terms of food, wine and general atmosphere. HIghly recommend
I went to this restaurant recently with my husband and two friends. We love to go out to eat and this was suppose to be a real treat. We would normally not spend this kind of money on a meal unless we thought that it was going to be outstanding. We arrived and our table was not ready. When we arrived the second time we were seated and ordered. I had pigeon as a started and duck as a main. The pigeon was nice with a mustard mash but nothing out of this world. The duck was too well done. I ordered it on the rare side and it came out barely pink. I felt like sending it back but did not want to be rude. I thought that the dessert would make up for the lack of creativity and over cooked duck but it did not. As steamed pear pudding with cinnamon ice cream was very dry and really nothing to write home about. I will not go back to this restaurant! I would rather go to paris for the day and have a real meal. Thanks for nothing and taking that 200 pounds off me St Honore, it was gettting heavy! Totally over-rated!
