Known as \"Ohio's Greatest Natural Underground Adventure\" and a Registered Natural Landmark, located two miles west of State Route 269 south on Township Road 178. The only cave of its kind open to the public in the U.S., Seneca Caverns is a unique, educational adventure. Open daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day and weekends only in May, September and to Mid October.
This caverns offers a hands-on tour that is great for families. The guide had my kids attention throughout the whole tour and had them asking some great questions. What a fun way to cool-off for the afternoon.
A must see when in the area... and don't forget to say hi to "George" when visiting (the resident bat who greeted us at the ticket window when we visited.)
Due to the recent (spring 2011) heavy rains, the Seneca Caverns are flooded. Although the staff attempts to put a positive spin on seeing the flooded caverns, a historical 30 year event, there is nothing to see. Only the first two of seven levels of the caverns are accessible; the third through seventh levels are filled with water. Current tours are of the first two levels with groups of four being taken a short distance beyond level two to see the top of the flooded third level, which is like viewing a flooded cellar. Although a two dollar discount is offered on admission ($12 from $14 for adults) and a “free” six dollar bag of dirt is provided for gem stone mining, it is not worth the price of admission at this time. According to the tour guide, Emily, the caverns are not expected to dry out until August 2011. If planning to tour the Seneca Caverns this summer, visitors would be advised to call ahead to learn the current extent of the flooding and how many levels are available for viewing.
This is a very interesting place to visit, but you need to be very careful while going up and down the "steps". Older people, people with health problems, or families with small children need to stay away from this place. If you get hurt while in the caverns, it will be a major project to get you out.
