This restaurant offers great value South Indian and Gujarati vegetarian dishes. It's a firm favourite with locals, especially theatre-goers and students, and has been around for almost twenty years. The cuisine is excellently cooked and the wine list is accomplished - these facts are recognised in many good food guides. Only the freshest of ingredients are used and the chefs have a delicate touch with spices, allowing the natural flavours of nuts, pulses and vegetables to shine through. A muted decor and relaxed atmosphere make it a pleasurable dining experience.
Great vegetarian food! The menu represents the culinary diversity in indian cuisine! Amazed that the dishes are inspired from all corners of india!! The food we ordered tasted like "HOMEMADE" and NOT over-saturated with onions (like most pakistani balti places that claim to be authentic indian but are not!). Fab night out with a lovely ambiance! I would highly recommend going!!!
Fantastic restaurant. The new menu is great with perfectly portioned dishes that are bursting with flavour. As far as Indian vegetarian food goes Kalpna certainly sets a very high standard. The service is also great with the staff more than happy to answer any question and engage in conversation. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys good food.
Travelled 50 miles to try some dosas (south indian pancakes).
One waiter said we could order off the menu.
But another one came and advised us to "eat the buffet because there is lots of choice and the cooks are too busy".
Spoke to the manager- told that the cooks were too busy.
APALLING PR skills from the manager. Will never go again and would advise against.
Traveled a few metres down the road and went to another indian-served me a la carte in 20 minutes flat even though they were near closing time.
we recently went to kalpna after its refurbishment and enjoyed a wonderful meal. There new seasonal menu has a lot to offer and is great value for money. The service at the restaurant was great, the staff were very friendly and helpful, I have nut allergies and the waiter was more then happy to recommend suitable dishes for me. All round me and my family had a wonderful time there and will definitly be returning!!!
I went to Kalpna Restaurant in Edinburgh yesterday and had a most unpleasant dining experience owing to an absolutely absurd ‘rule’ of their own that they tend to impose on their customers. There were four adults and two children in our group and because some of us weren’t really hungry, we ordered for 2 starters and 3 main courses. I was totally taken aback on being told by the waiter that we could not be served any food until we ordered for one more main course because it was their ‘rule’. When we asked to see the manager, rather than coming to our table he simply sent the word reinforcing the ‘rule’ through the waiter. We tried to explain that whatever we had ordered would be enough for us and any more than that would be a waste. Our reasoning fell on deaf ears. They would rather lose our custom than compromise with their weird ‘rule’.
I see this as nothing short of taking the customers at ransom. They have failed to understand the very basic reason why people go to a restaurant. It’s not just to eat but for an experience. We had gone there to experience India but were totally disappointed to see that this particular restaurant is an absolute disgrace to India and her centuries old culture and tradition of hospitality. I am totally perplexed to realize that despite such an offending and apathetic attitude towards their customers, they are still in business in the heart of one of the most prominent cities in UK.
If you are ever in Edinburgh this a superb restaurant to go to. Secondly I personally thought it was great value for money. Generous dishes at around 6 I think is cheaper then most especially seeing that the quality of food is so high. Yet, if you do find this a bit expensive try the all you can eat buffet at 6 you cant really go wrong with that.
All in all the food was amazing really tasty and would highly recommend it to anybody.
I love south Indian cuisine and Kalpna did not disappoint. However, this kind of food usually has a reputation for being cheap - but this was certainly not cheap! If it were more fairly priced then I might eat their frequently but as it is - I'll only go occasionally.
The food is excellent - much more flavoursome and classy than your usual Indian. Lots of gourmet dishes with unusual ingredients or combinations and subtle tastes. First rate food, if a bit pricey - but worth it. It's totally veggie but i've taken carnivores there and they've loved it too. Definitely recommended.
