Recently refurbished and modernised, the Madeira styles itself officially as a Portuguese restaurant but rather than being 100 per cent authentic, the menu merely draws on Portuguese influences. The result is an array of colourful meat dishes with highly flavoured sauces. Try the peppered rump steak as an example or the fiery chicken a vilo, which is laden with chillies. Vegetarians pretty much have to make do with omelettes, which are freshly prepared and very tasty although less exciting than the choices for carnivores. A single-course lunch menu is available at £5 per head.
