Happy Gathering, Cardiff

Having heard previous good reports ten of us went for my birthday treat a few days after Christmas. Unfortunately it was not much of a treat with the food being well below average. Soggy and poorly presented would be an appropriate summary. It was not cheap and none of us felt that we had experienced good quality Chinese cuisine. There are many better Chinese restaurants in and around Cardiff.

The food was o.k. but the most disappointing thing about this restaurant is the staff. I asked for Dim Sum and they brought me napkins and a beer for the whole afternoon without serving me any Dim Sum. I am definately not going there ever again. Also, the manager was very disrespectful.

Very good food, friendly service, good prices, extensive menu. Many unusual dishes. Looks a bit scruffy from the outside and in a fairly seedy area but excellent inside.

On about every Sunday at the end of each month I have been going to this resturant when they served their dim sum, which has always been of a high standard. When i begun to realise the taste of food at around 10 years old, it seemed to be brilliant and probably the best around. Things have changed a bit under the new chefs which is kind of letting it down compared to 5 years ago. Never the less it is still a fantastic resturant with food to a very high standard and I would recommend it to anyone. Very classy and well presented. Heres a tip, after your meal go to the kitchen and ask for some mints:P, they always gave them to me YUM after eights. I learnt to use chopsticks there aswell and been a pro since a very young age (2 years old or there abouts), and i have a bit of an attatchment to it but it is great!

I have been to the happy gathering 5 times, and each time the service, food and vaule was brillient. This is defenetaly a place worth a visit - i cannot think of anything that is wrong with this place.

This restaurant is neither top or bottom end of the food ladder, as someone who will not lie about the city I love I thought some honest oppinions about restaurants in Cardiff would be appreciated. The 'Happy Gathering' is what it is, a pleasent eatery where the staff are friendly and the food reasonable for both price and quality.

Happy Gathering serves great Chinese cuisine. It keeps Chinese traditions and values representing Chinese culture in a realistic way. Many famous people visit here e.g.(Noel from Hear'say)and the music is good (they played happy birthday for my friend!).But a let down would be the car park as my friend had an unfortunate break in to her car. So be careful! Overall good value and great atmosphere but it could be situated in a better location as canton isn't a safe area.
