Down Cathedral, Downpatrick

Down Cathedral is the resting place of Ireland's patron Saint Patrick and his grave and is inside the cathedral grounds. As such this cathedral, now belonging to the Church of Ireland, has been a place of pilgrimage and Christian worship for centuries. The site of the church was first established by Benedictine monks in 1183. The structure you see today dates back to the remodelling of the old church carried out between 1789 and 1812. There are some beautiful stained glass windows inside the cathedral and an ancient Irish High Cross featuring some intriguing carvings stands to the east of the building within the cathedral grounds.
