Clifton Street Graveyard, Belfast

Clifton Street Graveyard is one of the oldest graveyards in Belfast dating back to 1790 and is the place where many of the city's most prominent sons are buried. Several instigators of the United Irishmen, the society behind the 1798 rebellion are also buried here, including William Drennan and Henry Joy McCracken. The latter was publicly hanged in Cornmarket for his part in the Battle of Antrim, but his sister pleaded for his body and so his final resting place is here. Prominent linen merchants and ship builders, the two industries that created modern Belfast in the nineteenth century, are also buried here. Areas of the graveyard without headstones designate mass pauper graves.
