Roman Baths (The)

Description

The baths were constructed shortly after the Romans came to Britain in 43 A.D and are fed by Britain's only natural hot spring; the original paving slabs around the Baths are still used by visitors. Cold plunges, drainage systems, a sauna and a temple complete the center of the Roman town, Aquae Sulis, named after the Celtic goddess of water. Exhibits and Roman artifacts include a famous stone relief of the Gorgon's Head, mosaics, stone coffins, and a gilded head from a statue of Sulis Minerva. Visiting times vary, check website for details.

Wasn't my first choice
By Lisa M, 6/10/11
The Roman Baths were not my choice, but went with friends and must say that I really enjoyed it! Even if you are not into history, you cannot help but appreciate the beauty of the baths themselves and the tranqulity you feel while touring through.

Well worth a visit!
By Patricia Smith, 5/21/09
I found the Roman Baths, a really interesting place to visit. There was so much to see and the staff were very helpful The gift shop was one of the best I'd ever seen. I even found the most unusual mosaics by Roman Vision, and was able to buy some to redecorate my bathroom! Bath is well worth a visit.

well worth the visit

we nearly didn't visit the Roman Baths at Bath but so pleased we did, incredible engineering when you think it is nearly 2000 years old.

bath
By Dev, 6/14/07
Bath is a charming little town. It is beautiful espically the buildings and of the the roman grand bath itself , is amazing. If you take a day trip from london by car , the roads in bath can get confusing. the city tour bus and the skyline tour are good but I would say only one is enough. The price of tour includes both tours.

We'd Tour Again!
By LW, 6/10/07
This was a beautifully done tour. It is best early in the day or in the Spring or Fall when there are fewer tourists, but the baths are spectaular anytime of the year. There are well-done audio tours available with special sections---one focuses on points of interest for kids, another narrated by author Bill Bryson. Both add a depth which is enjoyable and much appreciated. Don't miss it! A glass of the mineral water is available for a fee from the adjoining Pump House. Restaurant

Must see in Bath
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/29/07
Fantastic remains of Romans in Britain and a cream tea at the end of it...perfect day out. Make sure that you get one of the free audio guides which are very informative. Not sure that drinking the water is a must though...eugh!

Definitely worth a visit
By CHRISTOPHER, 2/25/06
I've been to Bath only once and can't wait to go again. The Roman Baths are an incredible thing to see and how the Romans built such beauty around them. The audio was very informative and interesting. Can't wait until my next visit to England to see the Baths.

A fond memory
By SL, 2/23/06
My mom, grannie, and I went to Bath for a day trip. The bus ride from London to Bath was lovely - low grassy hills, old houses, and sheep everywhere! The Roman Baths are the central attraction in the city of Bath. (And obviously what the city is named after) I baths themselves are very warm (not supposed to touch the water, but we did - it was like a natural hot tub!) - making the entire place warm and inviting. The ruins of the baths are spectacular, with beautiful carvings and statues. I bought some perfume made with the Roman Bath water... I still have it and it smells great. In fact, I recall the souvenier shops in and around the Baths were all enticing and reasonable. The Baths themselves only take an hour or two to tour - leaving you lots of time to explore the rest of this city. The locals and Londoners told me that many Brits vacation in Bath. It's that good!

Loved the Baths
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/2/05
Came to Bath for a weekend break with my wife, stayed at the Carfax Hotel in Great Pulteney street and loved the pump room afternoon tea experience. If I would recommend only one thing on a visit to Bath go to the Roman Baths, but leave your car in car park and walk (the hotel was free parking - phew!) as there is now where near that's cheap.
